Job Fair

Tuesday's Job Fair at the Frosty Valley Country Club saw some people succeed.... and some folks kicking tires. But overall a great day to do some prospecting. Just asked Francis Mannino... a transplant from Luzerne County... who had two on – site interviews... telling WHLM News that jobs are plentiful in Columbia and Montour Counties. Many companies looking for workers.... and workers looking for jobs are now in the second phase of the job search.

Credit Card Skimmer

A credit card skimming device has been found inside yet another gas pump, this time in Luzerne County. Plains Township police say they removed the device Tuesday morning from a pump at the Carriage Stop Plaza Sunoco station along Route 115. Thieves use the devices to copy customers’ credit or debit card numbers. The latest case is at least the fifth time in about six weeks that police in our area say they’ve found evidence of credit card skimming at a gasoline pump.

A police chase led to a driver crashing into his own house Tuesday morning in Luzerne County. There were two separate high-speed chases that involved several police departments. The second chase ended in West Hazleton on Allen Street on the driver's front porch. Police losing Jefferey Kehler on Route 309. He was on a parole violation. A short time later, Hazleton police spotted the car near Lehigh Valley Hospital and that's when the second chase began. Police say Kahler eventually crashed his car into his Allen Street home in West Hazleton. He had to be treated at a hospital after the crash.

Wilkes University

Wilkes University launched a $1.5 million streetscape improvement project this week in front of the Henry Student Center on West South Street. The project will include repairing sidewalks and installing new ones, adding street lighting and curb ramps, and planting trees on West South and South Franklin streets. It also will include adding a safer pedestrian crosswalk and crossing signals in front of the Henry Center.

Wal Mart

The attorney for a man accused of firing shots outside a Walmart in Luzerne County filed a petition for a competency hearing. Scott Sargent, of Shenandoah, is accused of firing an AR-15 rifle at police outside a Walmart in Wilkes-Barre Township in October of 2015. An officer fired back, hitting Sargent in the stomach. An attorney claims Sargent has been diagnosed with severe mental health illnesses and is not competent to stand trial.

Christmas in July

Williamsport Mayor Gabe Campana announced plans this week for a summer street fair called Christmas in July. Plans for the event include a movie in the park and a visit from Santa. It coincides with an improvement project in the east end of the city called the East Third Street Gateway Project. Mayor Campana hopes the revamp will draw more people downtown.
