Bloomsburg University at Ashland University, September 4, 2010
-By WHLM's Jim Doyle
Playing without five projected starters, Bloomsburg played well enough to stay in the game, but the Huskies were done in by two long plays in a 24-14 season opening loss in Ohio. Trailing 10-6 in the third quarter the Husky defense had Ashland in a third and ten situation at their own 3 yard line. Sophomore quarterback Taylor Housewright then surprised the Huskies with a 97 yard scoring pass to Joe Horn. Down 17-6, the Huskies got back in the game with a 90 yard scoring drive capped on a 5 yard run by red shirt freshman running back Franklyn Quiteh. Quiteh then ran for the two point conversion to cut the margin to 17-14 with 3:33 to play. On Ashland's first play from scrimmage after the ensuing kickoff, the Eagles struck for their second big play of the game- a 53 yard scramble by Housewright that set up the game's final score with 51 seconds to play. Quiteh led the Huskies offense with 140 yards rushing. Pat Carey, in his debut as the Huskies starting quarterback, was 14-28 in passing for 150 yards. He was intercepted twice. The Huskies play their home opener Saturday at 1 against the Golden Eagles of Clarion University. Bloomsburg University Football Preview 2010
-By WHLM's Jim Doyle
The Huskies are coming off one of the strangest seasons in the Danny Hale era. They won their first eight games in 2009 and were ranked highly as a result. Then they lost their last three games. As a result they did not win the PSAC East and did not make it to the NCAA playoffs. The hope is that a quick start to this season will erase bad memories from the end of 2009.
OFFENSE
The 2009 season saw the offense struggle mightily early in the season, and it never did reach the usual Husky standards. Improvement this season will depend on the emergence of some wide receivers to mesh with a new starting quarterback, and for an offensive line lacks depth to remain healthy.
Quarterback
Red shirt junior Pat Carey had an outstanding career at Loyalsock High School and then went to Lafayette before transferring to Bloomsburg. He practiced with the Huskies last season and looked good in the spring and preseason. He will be replacing four-year starter Dan Latorre. Backing up Carey will be junior Mike Wagner and redshirt freshman Adam Diltz, a Central Columbia product.
Offensive Line
After spring practice, this unit looked like it might be the strength of the team, and it still might be, but academic problems and injuries have made depth a real problem. The left side should be solid with veterans Daryl Kurtz at tackle and All Conference performer Pat Casey at guard. The center position should also be solid with sophomore Alex Buchert who started in the spring and Chris Steck a redshirt freshman from Mount Carmel who can also help at guard. Senior Justin Walker missed a lot of preseason camp with an injury. The 320 pound right guard was an All Confeernce selection in 2009. Sophomore Brandon Allen did not start in the spring, but he will start at right tackle. Junior Kenny Orlando made the switch from defense in the spring and should see time at guard. The back up tackle position may have to be one of a number of talented freshmen.
Wide Receiver
Cory Stiger was the Huskies’ leading receiver last season and should have a good 2010 catching passes from his Loyalsock. High School teammate Pat Carey. Chris Tressler has been injured in the preseason so the Huskies need a few young receivers to emerge. Among those with the best chance are Tyler Guise, Kyle Fisher, Matt Marchioni, and Ryan Dickerson. Wide receiver was not a strength position. The Huskies are hoping it will be upgraded in 2009. A very reliable receiver is tight end Ben Weber, a senior captain who was a second team all conference pick last season. Mark Daniels, a 6-6 sophomore, is expected to be Weaber’s backup.
Running back
The Huskies got some very bad news halfway through preseason camp when junior running back Kenny Domzalski suffered a knee injury that will likely sideline him for the season. That may mean that all conference junior Derrick Price will have to have more of a workload. The good news is that redshirt freshman Franklyn Quiteh had a good spring and has also played well in the preseason. Sophomore Mike Quintans may move from fullback to tailback to provide depth. Fullback should be a strength with junior Matt Cox returning and being joined by Andre Morales, a transfer from Rutgers. As usual, the Huskies figure to be one of the top rushing offenses in the PSAC.
DEFENSE
This was clearly the strength of the team a year ago and might be again despite the departure of impact players like Justin Presley, Anthony Smith, Alphonso Nathan, and Jesse Cooper.
Defensive line
The Huskies were tough to run on last season, and that should be the case once again in 2010. The question is- can they get the same devastating pass rush they got last season from the line. Two talented seniors, Todd Givler and Marcus Zimmerman, return as the starting tackles with Chris Kennedy, Sean Moore, and Bloomsburgh High School product Michael Schlauch providing depth. Senior Dave Huot and junior John Pettine will start at the defensive end positions. Depth will be provided by Danville product Ryan Olaf, West Chester transfer Clarence Robinson and junior Dave Onarato.
Linebackers
This should be a real strength for the Huskies with two outstanding senior outside backers returning in captain Mike Varanavage and former Pottsville High School standout Thomas McFarland. The PSAC East’s defensive player of the year Anthony Smith is gone from the middle, but sophomore Jarrett Pidgeon looked good in the spring as well as in the preseason. Ryan Feldman, Pat Michael, and Sean Clift are expected to back up the starting three.
Secondary
While this unit won’t be nearly as deep as it was a year ago, it should remain strong. Junior Oscar Rivera is as good as it gets at corner in the PSAC- he was first team all conference in 2009. At the other starting corner is junior Vince Browning who started three games last season. Mark Scattene, Terrell Oglesby, and Wallace Jameson will provide depth. The safety position should also be strong with returning starter Alex Landis, a senior and a captain, and Danny Oliver who played a lot in 2009. Justin Rivera was expected to play a lot, but an injury has slowed him in the preseason. Look for Dan Haverstock to fill in at the safety positions.
Special teams
Gone is record setting kicker Jon Koenig. Still the Huskies may be very strong at placekicker. There was a spirited competition in the preseason with Bloomsburg High School product Jared Shannon and redshirt freshman Dan Fisher. Shannon was outstanding kicking off last season as a true freshman. The punter may be junior Drew Snyder. With the departure of Jesse Cooper and Brandon Reel, the kick and punt returns could drop off this season.
OVERALL OUTLOOK
This will be head coach Danny Hale’s 18th team at Bloomsburg. It won’t be his deepest, but it does have talent and should contend for a PSAC East title, and a post season playoff spot.
