Recycling Building Renamed
After a delay of a few months... the Bloomsburg Recycling building on Patterson Avenue was dedicated over the weekend in the name of former councilwoman Florence Thompson. She is considered the Godmother of recycling in the Susquehanna Valley... starting the town's program back in 1977. Recycling director Charles Fritz said Florence Thompson had a huge impact on what the town does today. One factoid brought out Saturday.... recycling in Bloomsburg became the way of life back in 1983... five years before it was mandated by the state of Pennsylvania.
About thirty residents of a Luzerne County Nursing home had to be evacuated Sunday night after either a water pipe or a boiler malfunctioned at the Lakeside Skilled Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Harveys Lake. Water... a few inches deep... filled the first floor of the facility. Most residents went to stay at a near – by facility... while others stayed with relatives.
It's that time of the year.... fire hydrants throughout the Town of Bloomsburg will be flushed by United Water crews. The Utility's Bob Manbeck says the operation begins Monday... and will continue through the rest of the week. Manbeck says if a hydrant is flushed in you neighborhood.... you water may be discolored. To resolve the issue... simply open the cold water tap on your spigot for a few minutes until the discoloration disappears...
The stars of one of the hottest cable TV shows in the country will make an appearance at this year's Bloomsburg Fair. It was announced over the weekend that Willie Robertson and his wife... Korie... will preform in a “talk show” setting. The Press – Enterprise is reporting in Monday's edition the stars of “Duck Dynasty” will appear on Sunday, September 21st on the grandstand stage. The announcement comes less than a week after the fair announced that the rock group ZZ Top will preform during the 159th exposition.
The state Game Commission is continuing its efforts to restore the population of wild pheasants in Penns Woods...and fields. Pheasants flourished in the late 60s and early 70s here in PA.. but populations have disappeared across most of the state since the mid 70s, mostly due to development in natural habitat areas and changes in farming practices. In response, the state Game Commission has established four so-called "pheasant recovery areas" to help bring the birds back, and it seems to be working. The Game Commission has relied on western states to supply birds for repopulation here.
Church to Close
After a hundred years of being a church... Holy Savior Church in Wilkes – Barre will be closing it's doors for good in June. The last service there is June 29th... so says a spokesman for the Diocese of Scranton. The decision follows a consolidation of several churches back in 2011.
Oil & Gas Report
The state Department of Environmental Protection has released its first-ever Oil and Gas Annual Report. The Oil and Gas Annual Report is intended to provide information and insight on the D-E-Ps mission to protect Pennsylvania's air, land and water from pollution and to provide for the health and safety of its citizens. A new video has also been released featuring D-E-P staff conducting the work of the Oil and Gas Program in the field. Car Slams Church
A Hazleton man is in trouble with the law after slamming his car into the Diamond United Methodist Church at the corner of West Diamond Avenue and Locust Street on Saturday. Police say 50 – year old Jeffrey Broyan lost control of his car... and was taken to a Hazleton hospital for treatment. He was subsequently arrested by police for driving under the influence.
Pennsylvania – based companies of PPL Corporation and the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers Local 1600 have reached a tentative agreement on a three year labor contract. Among other items... it included a nearly eight percent wage hike over the term of the contract... as well as chances in healthcare benefit options. The local represents about 3-thousand workers for PPL Electric Utilities, power plants owned by the company and various PPL corporate services groups.
State House Representative Karen Boback who represents part of Columbia County... along with Rep. Phyllis Mundy of Luzerne County will host an Elder Justice Seminar today at Misericordia University in Dallas. There will be information on how senior can prevent from becoming victim of a crime... as well as providing information about long – term care planning. The seminar gets underway at 9 O'clock this morning at Misericordia Insalaco Hall.
A PennDOT maintenance crew will spend Thursday and Friday to replace large pipes under Hollow Road in Catawissa Township in order to improve drainage. The pipe project is one mile north of Catawissa. A red arrow detour will be in effect using River Hill Drive... West Main Street and Second Street in Catawissa.
Defensive end Larry Webster became the 6th player in Bloomsburg University history to be drafted by the NFL when he was taken in the 4th round by the Detroit Lions on Saturday. Two of Webster's Husky teammates signed as free agents following the draft. Offensive tackle Matt Feiler signed with the Houston Texans and guard Brian Clarke signed with the Dallas Cowboys.
The Bloomsburg University softball team saw its season come to an end yesterday with a 5-2 loss to California at the N.C.A.A. Division 2 Atlantic Regional Championships. The Huskies finished the season with a record of 28 and 19.
The Philadelphia Phillies blew a 4-1 lead in a 5-4 loss to the New York Mets yesterday in a game that went 11 innings. The Phils have Monday off. Tuesday night they open a home series against the Los Angeles Angels.

The Milwaukee Brewers defeated the New York Yankees 6-5 and it was the St. Louis Cardinals over the Pittsburgh Pirates 6 to 5.
In the NHL playoffs last night... the New York Rangers skated past the Pittsburgh Penguins 3 to 1. That second round playoff series is tied at 3 games apiece.
