Central Columbia Renovations

The infrastructure at the Central Columbia High School is slowly falling apart... and the 52 – year old building will undergo a massive $34 – million renovation once the current school year ends. One feature... according to superintendent Harry Mathias... is using Geo – thermal to heat and cool the building. During the year long project... students will be taught at the middle school... as well as 11 modular units already in place on the site.

 

Teen Star Auditions

There were auditions Wednesday at the Millville High School Auditorium for contestants who want to preform in the Teen Star musical competition June 1st on the B-U campus. This is the fourth year First Columbia Bank and Trust in Bloomsburg has sponsored the event. President Lance Diehl says he doesn't envy the job of the judges looking for contestants. One other audition is scheduled Saturday... staring at 10 O'clock at the Millville High School Auditorium.

 

Pet & Toy Parade

A big Wednesday night in Bloomsburg.... the 48th annual Kiwanis Pet and Toy parade rolling south on Market Street.... and the start of the Bloomsburg Fire Department Carnival. As hundreds of people lined the street to hear the Catawissa Military Band... also viewing the kids... their parents... their pets and toys. Fire apparatus from around the area was also in the line of march. The Bloomsburg Fire Department carnival runs through Saturday night...

 

On Line Gaming
In a year of lackluster revenues, a new study says legalizing online gambling could be Pennsylvania's best bet for raising additional tax dollars. Online gambling could produce another $113 million a year in tax revenues, a report says. The study commissioned by the Senate assessed gambling in the state and the potential impact of online gambling at PA's 12 casinos. Casinos could also add fantasy and prediction gambling. The Senate Community Economic and Recreational Development Committee will discuss the findings in June.

 

Hugo Selenski Trial

A new date for the double murder trial of Hugo Selenski is now set for November 12th at the Luzerne County Courthouse in Wilkes – Barre. He was to have gone on trial this month... but it was postponed. Selenski has some new attorneys... and they need time to review the case. He is accused of murdering two people 12 years ago... and burying their bodies behind his home.

 

Wrong Way Arrest

A 26 – year old man has been taken into custody by Hazleton police after his late model car struck a porch and several vehicles after traveling the wrong way on West Maple Street. Shawn Malloy was charged for suspicion of driving under the influence... as well as operating a vehicle with a suspended license.

 

Wilkes – Barre Fire

Fire investigators in Wilkes – Barre are trying to figure out what started a blaze which extensively damaged two homes on Maxwell Street. The fire was spotted early yesterday morning. The people living inside the buildings were able to escape unharmed.

 

WHLM Sports

NFL Draft

The 2014 NFL draft begins Thursday night and several Bloomsburg University seniors are hoping to hear their names called before the draft concludes on Saturday. Defensive end Larry Webster, offensive linemen Matt Feiler and Brian Clarke... as well as running back Franklyn Quiteh are all on the NFL scouts' radar. Five Huskies have been drafted in the school's football history. The latest was all pro guard Jahri Evans who was a fourth round pick in 2006.

 

HS Baseball

In high school baseball Wednesday... Berwick downed Hazleton 4 to 2... Bloomsburg defeated Benton 11 to 2... Central Columbia blanked Shamokin 1 to nothing... It was Montoursville over Danville 11 to 4... Southern Columbia blanked Millville 4 to nothing... and Columbia Montour Vo – Tech defeated Bucktail 10 to nothing.

 

HS Softball

In girls softball... Central Columbia downed Bloomsburg 12 to 2... Southern Columbia beat Lewisburg 13 to 1... and Columbia – Montour Vo – Tech defeated Bucktail 19 to 3.

 

PHL Phillies

In the first of a two game series Wednesday night in Toronto... the Philadelphia Phillies were blanked by the Blue Jays 10 to nothing. The teams meet again tonight at 7:05. Coverage on the WHLM Stations begins with the pregame show at 6:30.

 

Other MLB Games

In other games Wednesday night... the Pittsburgh Pirates defeated the San Francisco Giants 4 to 3... the Miami Marlins getting by the New York Mets 1 to nothing... and it was the New York Yankees over the Los Angeles Angles 9 to 2.

 

NHL

In the NHL playoffs Wednesday night... the Pittsburgh Penguins skated by the New York Rangers 4 to 2. Pittsburgh now leads the best of seven series 3 games to 1.
