Measles Exposure

Geisinger Medical Center in Danville is one of two hospitals in the region that may have exposed guests to measles. The PA Department of Health says two cases of measles possibly occurred not only at Geisinger, but at the Pocono Regional Medical Center in East Stroudsburg. Dr. Lisa Esolen... the head of infection control at Geisinger... says symptoms include a fever, cough, stuffy, runny nose for a couple of days... then after a couple of days, a rash begins. A Geisinger spokesman says anyone at the Foss Clinic on the afternoon of April 23rd... or may have ridden the shuttle buses... could be at risk.


Abigail's Attic

The Geisinger Medical Center Auxiliary... burned out of their Abigail's Attic location on Mill Street in Danville a few weeks ago... needs your help. That word from long – time thrift shop manager April Leese. Ms. Leese says the items in their shop were smoke damaged during the fire at a Mill Street restaurant last month. If you have some items to donate... you can drop them off Tuesday... in the Abigail Lobby at GMC.


Berwick Salvation Army

An estimated 40 years is a long time between upgrades. Lt. Kevin Polito of the Berwick Salvation Army knows that all to well. But now... their facility on West Second Street is being spiffed up thanks to a benefactor. The upgrade of the facility... the first since 1974 will cost the Berwick Chapter an estimated $200,000, but Lt. Polito says it will be worth it. The work is underway now... and should be finished by July.


Luzerne County

Cash strapped Luzerne County Government is looking at a new way to raise money. They'll looking at the possibility of logging hundreds of acres of county – owned land. In particular... they're taking a look at a plot of land containing hundreds of acres of trees near Moon Lake Park near Nanticoke... cut down the trees and sell them. The revenue from the lumber could close some of the gap in the budget... now totaling hundreds of millions of dollars.


State Revenue

A closely watched state revenue report for April shows a $506 – million dollar revenue shortfall... with a liquor fund transfer factored in for the fiscal year ending June 30th. One of the main reasons for the shortfall is that personal state income and corporate taxes are coming in below projections. In addition... the financial service Standard and Poors says it could downgrade the state's credit rating is things don't improve.


Feds Blamed for Shortfall

The Governor and other Republicans point to the federal government as being responsible for Pennsylvania's shortfall in tax collections. Tax revenue for the commonwealth was down nine percent in April. GOP Senate Appropriations Chairman Jake Corman puts PA's shortfall partly at the feet of the federal government for ending tax breaks on capital gains, dividends and higher wage earners. The Independent Fiscal Office says revenue wasn't lost, but pulled into 2012 in order to get income in under the lower tax rates.


Pittston Fire

A spectacular fire destroyed a home Monday afternoon in Pittston. The blaze began around 3 O'clock on Tedrick Street near East Columbus Avenue. A family of five lived in the structure. Now... a fire marshal has been called in to determined the cause of the blaze.


Representative Culver Meeting

State Representative Lynda Schlegel Culver who district includes Sunbury will host her annual meeting next week to update the public on the boating and marina schedule at Shikellamy State Park. The meeting is next Thursday at 6 O'clock at the Degenstein Community Library. Department of Conservation and Natural Resources’ manager at Shikellamy State Park John Clifford will provide an overview of the 2014 park complex, current and future plans for the marina and information about seasonal activities at the park.

BU Softball

For the 32nd consecutive season, the Bloomsburg University softball team has been selected for the NCAA Division 2 championships. The Huskies are seeded third in the Atlantic One Region and will take on second seeded West Chester in the opening round on Friday afternoon at California University of Pennsylvania.


HS Baseball

Monday in high school baseball... Warrior Run defeated Central Columbia 6 to 5... and Selinsgrove downed Danville 4 – 1...


HS Softball

In girls softball... it was Loyalsock over Southern Columbia 6 to 2... Bloomsburg got the best of Columbia – Montour Vo-Tech 3 to 1... and Berwick defeated North Schuylkill 3 to 2...


PHL Phillies

In the first of a two game home series against Toronto last night... the Blue Jays blanked the Philadelphia Phillies 3 to nothing. Game two is Tuesday night. Coverage on the whlm stations begins with the pregame show at 6:30.


Other MLB Games

In other games Monday night... the San Francisco Giants just got by the Pittsburgh Pirates 11 to 10... the Miami Marlins outscored the New York Mets 4 to 3... and the Los Angeles Angels defeated the New York Yankees 4 to 1.



In the NHL Playoffs... the Pittsburgh Penguins blanked the New York Rangers 2 to nothing. The victory gives Pittsburgh a 2 games to one lead in second round playoff action.
