Main Street Collision

In a story you heard first on Newsradio 930, the driver of a pickup truck parked along the 100 block of East Main Street in downtown Bloomsburg opened his door into the path of an oncoming tractor-trailer late Friday morning. The door was crumpled under the force of the semi, which was hauling a tanker of gasoline. The driver of the pickup was shaken but not injured.

Sex Assault Alleged

A 24 – year old Catawissa man is facing nearly 200 sex related charges after allegedly having sexual contact with two young girls. Our media partner... Newswatch 16 is reporting that Matthew Mausteller is accused of having inappropriate contact with two girls... aged six and eleven... at his home and a Catawissa housing project. Court papers indicate Mausteller forced the two kids to touch him... as he allegedly touched them. Mausteller was arraigned Thursday and was remanded to the Columbia County Prison.

 

Veterans Memorial

There is an effort underway to build an all – inclusive memorial to military veterans vets in Bloomsburg. A meeting was held Thursday night... designed to get the project rolling among service groups. Bloomsburg council person Diane Levan is one of the organizers... telling me fund raising will be targeted at a different demographic... other than folks who have already given to other different projects. Ms. Levan says an estimated $500,000 will be needed. The proposed memorial will sit in the middle of Market Street at the Bloomsburg Town Park. Design and engineering work already finalized.

 

Kidsburg Construction

What a difference a day makes.... power drills working non – stop and volunteers pitching in to help construct Kidsburg at Bloomsburg's Town Park. Wind and rain hampered the start of the build out on Wednesday... but with temperatures in the 70's Thursday about a hundred volunteers pitched in. Organizers says they can use additional volunteers and power tools in order to get the build wrapped up Sunday afternoon.

 

Week of Caring

The Berwick Area United Way is launching it's “Week of Caring” on Monday... leading up to next Saturday's Celebrate Berwick. The object... spiffing up the borough... a spring cleaning of sorts. The organization's Ginny Crake talked about the satisfaction of taking part. Want to get involved... it's easy to do.... just call the Berwick Area United Way office on East Second Street to volunteer your group.... or as an individual.

 

Corbett / Marijuana
Governor Tom Corbett is now backing medical marijuana. But he decision deals with a very specific type of treatment. The Governor, after meeting with parents of children with severe seizure disorders, has proposed allowing a research-based pilot program that would provide access to an oil derivative of cannabis that's taken orally called CBD. The program would be conducted with leading children's hospitals in Pennsylvania and include further scientific study of the use of the so-called marijuana oil.

 

Bob Guzzardi

The State Supreme Court has removed the only challenger to Governor Corbett on the May 20th Republican primary ballot. Voting 5 to 2... the state's high court ruled that Bob Guzzardi's name will not appear on the ballot. The reason... the Guzzardi campaign failed to file financial interest papers with the state ethics commission. Political observers said the Ardmore businessman had no chance of beating Governor Corbett in the primary.

 

Dream Machines Cruise - In

Looking for something to do on Sunday... how 'bout taking in the third annual car cruise in to benefit Millville – based Camp Victory. The event begins at 9 O'clock Sunday morning... and also features a poker run for classic cars with prizes awarded Sunday afternoon. All the proceeds go to the many camps held throughout the summer at Camp Victory.

 

Pete Laubach

One of the founders of the Berwick Area Ambulance Association and a well – known resident has passed. Eugene Laubach died this week. In the late 1950's... he was one of a handful of people to start a group providing ambulance service to the greater Berwick area. Graveside funeral services are set for Monday at 11 O'clock at the Pine Grove Cemetery on Market Street in Berwick.

 

Letteer Sentencing

A Luzerne County man will spend the next two to five years in state prison for hitting and killing a 5 – year old youngster and then fleeing the scene. The incident happened back in December of 2012 on West North Street in Wilkes – Barre. Little Kevin Miller had just left a Christmas party with his parents. Now... Thomas Letteer of Plains Township was hustled off to state prison after the sentence was handed down.

 

Arson Fire

Authorities now say that brush fire in Foster Township last week is a case of arson. An estimated 330 acres of brush and wooded area were scorched in the Hickory Hills sub – division south of Hazleton. If you have any information dealing with the fire... call state police.

 

Tamaqua Fire

Hart Metals, Incorporated on Broad Street in Tamaqua is open for business... after a fire at the plant earlier this week. The firm makes magnesium powder... and somehow... some of the material caught fire. One firefighter was taken to the hospital for breathing in too many fumes.

 

WHLM Sports

BU Baseball

The Bloomsburg University baseball team was eliminated from the PSAC tournament Thursday with a 2-1 loss to Pitt-Johnstown. The Huskies will now await word on a possible NCAA tournament bid.

 

BU Softball

The Bloomsburg University softball team defeated Gannon 5-2 Thursday in their first game in the PSAC tournament. That tournament is being played at Veteran's Park in Quakertown.

 

HS Football

Four area high school football players will be playing this Sunday in the Pennsylvania Scholastic Football Coaches Association's East-West All Star game. C.J. Curry and Dain Kowalski of Berwick... as well as Josh Tripp and Robert Delbo of Southern Columbia will be playing for the East team. The game will start at 2 o'clock at Franklin Regional High School near Pittsburgh.

 

PHL Phillies

The Philadelphia Phillies begins a weekend home series Friday night with the Washington Nationals. Tonight's first pitch is scheduled for 7:05. Coverage on the WHLM Stations begins with the pregame show at 6:30.

 

Other games

In games played Thursday night, in a doubleheader in Baltimore... the Orioles downed the Pittsburgh Pirates 5 to 1... in the nightcap Baltimore defeated Pittsburgh 6 – 5. The Colorado Rockies beat the New York Mets 7 to 4... and it was the New York Yankees getting by the Seattle Mariners 2 to 1.
