Flood Watch Expires

That flood watch issued earlier this week has been dropped by the National Weather Service in State College. Columbia and Montour County's... as well as the Susquehanna River watershed experiencing heavy rains the past 24 to 36 hours... but they've moved on to the east. The major concern was the creeks and tributaries flowing into the Susquehanna River watershed. But that has passed. And the river isn't an issue. For example in Bloomsburg... the Susquehanna is expected to crest at 11 feet Friday morning... that's five feet below action stage.

 

Kidsburg Build

It was raining... the wind was blowing... and the temperatures in the mid 40's... but the first day of the build out of Kidsburg in Bloomsburg got underway with the help of volunteers. Jody Fitzpatrick of South Center Township was just one of the dozens of people on site in Town Park. The build continues today... rain or shine... with volunteers and tools still needed to wrap up the construction by Sunday afternoon.

 

Game Protection

The Pennsylvania House Game and Fisheries Committee met this week to discuss a new bill dealing with threatened and endangered species. Its opponents say some elements of the legislation go "too far" by effectively second-guessing scientific data. Oversight on endangered species is currently split between the Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission... and the state game commission... as well as the Department of Conservation and Natural Resources.

 

Murder Suspect

A man wanted in connection in the death of his girlfriend in Shenandoah has been arrested in New York City. Louis Nunez – Calderon was arrested by U.S. Marshals... NYPD and State Police in the Big Apple Wednesday night. He is the main suspect in the murder of Wendy Contreras. Her body was found in her home on Centre Street in Shenandoah Tuesday afternoon. State Police say arrangements are being made to bring Nunez – Calderon back to Schuylkill County.

 

Gaming Revenue

The company that owns Mohegan Sun Casinos near Wilkes – Barre and in Connecticut are reporting a 32 percent drop in second quarter profit. That... according to the company... was due to lower slot machine revenue and the brutal winter which effected the northeast... keeping senior citizens at home. Despite the downturn... both casino's did relatively well compared to other gaming locations in the northeast.

 

Gas Prices

You've probably noticed that prices are rising at the gas pump. Pennsylvania's average price is 6 cents higher than last week and 30 cents above this time last year. Jenny Robinson of Triple - A Mid Atlantic says prices will likely peak early next week. But she says they may go down again by Memorial Day weekend. With an average price to start the week of $3.77 a gallon, PA could top last year's high point of $3.80 a gallon.

BU Baseball

Five members of the Bloomsburg University baseball team have been honored by the PSAC. Huskies' head coach Mike Collins is the PSAC East coach of the year while Damen Muth is the Eastern Division's freshman of the year as well as a second team all East selection. Junior third basemen Eric Frain and pitcher Casey Cooperman were first team picks and pitcher Tyler Hill was a second team choice. Thursday at 3:30, the Huskies take on Pitt - Johnstown in a PSAC first round playoff game at Kelly Automotive Park in Butler. that game was postponed from Wednesday.

 

PHL Phillies

The Philadelphia Phillies home game against the New York Mets last night was postponed until June 2nd. On Friday night, the Phils open a weekend home series against the Washington Nationals. The Pirates game at Baltimore last night was also postponed as was the Yankees home game against Seattle.

 

NHL

In the NHL Playoffs... the New York Rangers defeated the Philadelphia Flyers 2 to 1 Wednesday night. The Rangers now earn the right enter round two of the playoffs to take on the Pittsburgh Penguins Friday night.
