The National Weather Service in State College says we could be in for a lot of rain between now and Thursday at midday. How 'bout 3 to 5 inches... with most of it expected to fall Wednesday night. That's prompted the issuance of a flood watch starting at 6 O'clock Tuesday night... through Thursday at noon time. Bloomsburg Town Administrator Bill Lowthert says he's working closely with Columbia County Emergency Management. We're keeping an eye on the situation.
NEPA Gas Prices
Gas prices continue to rise across northeastern Pennsylvania. The Triple A Fuel Gauge report shows that self – serve, unleaded regular is averaging $3.74 a gallon... the same as it was over the weekend. That's up three cents from a week ago... and a 15 - cents a gallon increase from a month ago. The Wall Street Journal is reporting gasoline prices are rising just ahead of the summer vacation season... as refiners are shipping more gas to other countries.
Kiwanis Pet & Toy
You can tell spring is here... and summer is just around the corner with the start of the area volunteer firemen carnival's. The first one begins next Wednesday... when the Kiwanis Pet and Toy Parade kick's off the Bloomsburg Fire Department event. Eric Stahley of the Kiwanis says the parade forms behind the Columbia County Courthouse at 5:30 next Wednesday.... moves west on Ridge Avenue and south on Market Street. The carnival runs through Saturday... May 10th behind the Bloomsburg Fire Hall in the 900 block of Market Street.
A lot of activity at the new Kidsburg two point oh site at the Bloomsburg Town Park as volunteer completed the so – called pre – build. Beginning Wednesday... organizer Deb Huckens says volunteers are needed to help with the construction of the new Kidsburg play area... .and there is work for just about everyone. The new Kidsburg will replace the original play area which was extensively damaged during the flood of 2011.
Luzerne Co Shooting
State Police from Shickshinny are investigating a shooting which happened Monday night in Fairmont Township... in Luzerne County. Authorities were called to the 600 block of Mossville Road near Sweet Valley. One person was Life-flighted to the hospital. Police are remaining tight lipped... not identifying the victim or the alleged shooter.
While Governor Corbett waits for word on his health insurance expansion plan, people who lack coverage made their case to a state house committee on Monday. WHLM's Cathy Clark reports a dozen people testified in person or by video before the House Human Services Committee that they would have been covered if the state had expanded Medicaid. Instead, they're caught in a gap- unable to qualify for the current program or for the federal health exchange and subsidies. But one member of the committee said he doesn't think the federal government is going to pay what it's promising for expansion considering the debt it faces.
PA National Guard
The Pennsylvania National Guard's latest fight could be against a plan to reduce its forces. WHLM's B.J. Small reports military cuts proposed by U.S. Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel would occur for the National Guard in 2016 and hit them by nine percent, or 1,400 troops. The target now is the 55th Brigade headquartered in Scranton, with major units in Wilkes-Barre, Lewisburg, Sellers, and Philadelphia. Pennsylvania's Adjutant General Wesley Craig considers citizen soldiers to be a bargain and calls the cuts foolhardy. 50 state governors are lobbying in opposition.
An autopsy will be preformed today on the body of a 50 – year old man found dead in his hope in West Mahanoy Township near Frackville... in neighboring Schuylkill County. The body of the unidentified man was found Monday morning. Police say one person is in custody. He's identified as 53 year old Thomas Petrousky and is being held in the Schuylkill County jail.
State Police in Laporte are investigating some vandalism which occurred over the weekend near in Sullivan County to equipment owned by Brigadier Pipeline. Investigators say at least two people spray painted graffiti on metal plates covering Lake Road near Camp Bruele... then they rolled tires down a hill and followed that up by smashing the windshield of an excavator with a rock. Anyone with information about the incident is asked to call state police at Laporte.
A Northumberland County man could spend up to the next seven years in prison. James Neidinger of Shamokin pleaded “no contest” to starting three fires over a two year period of time. During court proceedings in Sunbury... the judge sentencing Neidinger from 3 and a half to seven years in state prison... plus pay $77,000 in restitution.
A prominent former athlete, coach, teacher, and administrator was laid to rest yesterday in Berwick. Ron Powlus, Senior passed away last Thursday at age 67. Powlus was an outstanding three sport athlete at Nescopeck High School. Later he was a teacher, coach and administrator at Northwest High School. Powlus is the father of former Berwick and Notre Dame quarterback Ron Powlus, Jr.
In high School baseball Monday... Muncy downed Benton 9 to 3... Southern Columbia defeated Bloomsburg 3 to 2... it was Hughesville over Central Columbia 7 to 3... and Mifflinburg got by Danville 3 to 2.
In girls softball... Nanticoke defeated Berwick 7 to 3... Hughesville downed Benton 3 to 1... and it was Southern Columbia over Columbia-Montour Vo-Tech 7 to 0.
The Phillies were idle Monday... coming off a ten game west coast road trip. They open a home series with the New York Mets tonight with the first pitch scheduled for 7:05. Coverage on the WHLM Stations begins with the pregame show at 6:30.
In the NHL playoffs Monday night... The Pittsburgh Penguins clinched their first round series over the Columbus Bluejackets 4 to 3....
