Danville Fire Folo
Folks picked up the pieces of their lives Monday after a Sunday night fire destroyed a downtown Danville restaurant... a neighboring third floor apartment of an adjoining building... with smoke and water damage throughout two buildings. It's believed the fire started in the second floor office of B.J.'s Steaks and Ribs on Mill Street. Now... authorities spent Monday trying to pinpoint the cause of Sunday night's Mill Street blaze. For Mike Kuziak who owns the building next to the restaurant... he says he plans to rebuild the apartments and clean up the bottom two floors of his building so his tenants can return... and Abigail's can resume business.
Car Wash Damage
Bloomsburg Police are looking for a man seen in surveillance video... causing damage to a 24 hour car wash. BloomUToday.com is reporting the Thrifty Car Wash at 7th and Catherine Streets became the target of the damage early in the morning of March 26th. The still frame from the video shows the alleged bandit... a white male... who appears to be in his 20's wearing a hoodie. If you have any information about the vandalism... give Bloomsburg Police a call.
Berwick Borough Manager
The search begins Tuesday for a replacement for Berwick Borough Manager Robert Hivish... who plans to move into the private sector. That... after Borough Council accepted the Hivish resignation. Hivish plans to begin work soon with a Lackawanna County construction company. No time table has been established to find a permanent replacement... allowing field supervisors to watch over on – going projects.
It's coming down to the last few days for volunteers to sign up to help with the pre – build and the actual build of Kidsburg 2.0. The original Kidsburg was damaged during the Lee flood... and now organizers... like Deb Huckens hope folks in the Susquehanna Valley come through with a helping hand. The three day pre – build is set to begin Friday... with the actual construction of Kidsburg getting underway on the 30th. To sign up... simply go to the organization's website at Kidsburg.org.
Forgetfulness and memory loss could be caused by no more serious a brain condition than there simply not being enough storage space left. Karen Kepner, a nurse practitioner with the program "Living Independently for Elders" at Geisinger Medical Center, equates the brain's capacity to recall to that of a computer data file. Ms. Kepner says memories aren't lost unless dementia sets in. She suggests exercising the brain, which is a muscle, with reading and word games.
United Rehab Clients
Clients who used United Rehabilitation Services in Hazleton are being assured that the department of Public Welfare is working for the continual care for patients in the area. URS recently said it intended to close down facilities not only in Hazleton, but Wilkes – Barre and Tunkhannock as well. All three facilities serve about 220 individuals... with upwards of 70 employees involved in the shut down. URS says a 2012 DPW rate change as the source of it's financial problems.
Congressman Lou Barletta is back in the district this week... and he's slated to make a number of public appearances. Mr. Barletta addresses the NEPA Manufacturers and Employers Association at the Top of the 80's starting Tuesday at midday. On Wednesday... he'll appear at a breakfast meeting of the Greater Hazleton Chamber of Commerce at the Genetti Inn and Suites... and later this week, Mr. Barletta appears in Carlisle. At the events he's expected to talk about the state of current legislation in Washington... and gather input on pending issues.
The average price of a gallon of gas continues to rise. The latest Triple A Fuel Gauge report shows the average price of self – serve, unleaded regular is $3.71 across northeastern Pennsylvania. That's the same as over the weekend... and up 7 cents a gallon from a week ago. A month ago... we were paying an average of $3.60 a gallon.
The PA Department of Labor and Industry says the state's unemployment rate declined two – tenths of a percentage point... to an even six percent in March. That's the lowest it's been since October of 2008. The commonwealth’s rate was seven-tenths of a percentage point below the U.S. rate, which was unchanged from February at 6.7%. The state rate was down 1.7% from its March 2013 rate of 7.7%.
Bloomsburg University senior Casey Cooperman has been named the PSAC Eastern Division pitcher of the week after shutting out defending conference champion East Stroudsburg last Friday. It was his 6th consecutive complete game.
The Bloomsburg University softball team split a doublehader Monday at East Stroudsburg losing the first game 3-2 and winning the nightcap 4-2.

In high school baseball Monday... Berwick downed Lake Lehman 11 to 2... and Central Columbia got by Shikellamy 7 to 6.
High School Softball
In girls High School softball Monday... Bloomsburg blanked Montgomery 16 to nothing... Berwick outscored Coughlin 8 to 6... and Southern Columbia defeated Benton 12 to nothing.
In the first game of their series in Los Angeles. The Philadelphia Phillies blanked the Dodgers 7 to nothing. Game two is Tuesday night. Coverage on the WHLM Stations begins with the pregame show at 9:35.

In other games Monday night... the Pittsburgh Pirates just got by the Cincinnati Reds 6 to 5... and the New York Mets defeated the St. Louis Cardinals 2 to nothing.
In game three of an NHL playoff series Monday night... The Pittsburgh Penguins skated by the Columbus Bluejackets 4 to 3. Pittsburgh now leads the series two games to one.
