Despite four hours of negotiations Wednesday night... unionized teachers at the Danville Area School District are out on the picket line Thursday morning... after failing to reach a new contract agreement. Superintendent Cheryl Latorre says the bottom line is that the work stoppage hurts kids the most. The work stoppage is expected to be anywhere from five to six days long. Danville Area graduation for seniors is still scheduled for June 6th. Teachers have been working without a contract since 2012.
The drug problem is real... and it's here at home. That word from participants involved in next week's drug and alcohol program at the Danville Middle School hosted by State Representative Kurt Masser. Representative Masser telling reporters during a news conference Wednesday... he lost a niece to a drug overdose last year. Next week's program take place Thursday in the Danville Middle High School Auditorium beginning at 6:30.
The Bloomsburg Library is celebrating it's 125th anniversary... first chartered by the state in 1889. Library Director Hal Pratt says several mens club's received the original charter... with the library becoming was it is in 1903. Pratt says there are special events planned at the Market Street facility during the rest of the year highlighting the importance of the library.
A heavily used bridge on Martzville road near the Berwick Country Club will be replaced starting next week. PennDOT's Rick Mason says work will begin Monday to replace a span built back in 1938... which takes Martzville Road over Glen Brook in Briar Creek Township. The bridge will be replaced with a new concrete box culvert on the same alignment. Construction should be completed by late July.
United Rehabilitation Service says they plan to pull the plug on it's locations in Hazleton... Wilkes – Barre and Tunkhannock. A URS spokesperson says cuts in funding is making it impossible to serve it's 250 clients. URS has a budget gap of about a million dollars. The rehab service provides employment and activities for folks with disabilities.
Jersey Man Extradited
A man from New Jersey is locked up in the Luzerne County prison on $100,000 cash bail after his extradition from the Garden State. Carlos Lopez is accused of holding a Hazleton woman against her will... and allegedly sexually assaulting her late last year. Hazleton police tracked him to New Jersey and brought him back to face charges.
It's no Easter Holiday weekend for Pennsylvania State Troopers. The PSP says troopers will be patrolling the highways... engaging in high visibility enforcement towards aggressive drivers. A spokesperson out of Troop L in Berks County says cops will be looking for abrupt lane changes... driving under the influence... driving too fast for condition... and following too closely.
Concealed Carry Class
State Representative Kurt Masser... who represents Columbia... Montour and Northumberland Counties will hold a Concealed Carry Seminar next Wednesday in Ranshaw. At the class... Northumberland County DA Toni Rosini... Montour County Sheriff Ray Gerringer... and Northumberland County Sheriff Robert Wolfe will bring folks up to speed on the laws dealing with weapon concealment. The session begins at 6 O'clock at the Brady Fire Company in Ranshaw.
The Bloomsburg University baseball team extended its winning streak to 7 in a row Wednesday with a doubleheader sweep of Shippensburg at Danny Litwhiler Field. The Huskies won the the first game 5-2 and the nightcap 4-1.
In high school baseball, it was Central Columbia over Southern Columbia 6 – 2.
In girls High school softball... Berwick defeated Crestwood 9 – 1..
In major league baseball Wednesday... the Atlanta Braves blanked the Philadelphia Phillies 1 to nothing. The teams conclude their series in Philadelphia Thursday in a 1:05 start. Coverage on the WHLM Stations begins with the pregame show at 12:30.
In other action Wednesday... the New York Mets beat the Arizona Diamondbacks 5-2... the Pittsburgh Pirates lost to the Cincinnati Reds 4-0... The New York Yankees were home for two games against the Chicago Cubs. In the first game... the Yankees defeated the Cub 3 to nothing. In the nightcap, the Yankees blanked the Cubs 2 to nothing.
The NHL playoffs began Thursday night. In the opening round game... the Pittsburgh Penguins getting by Columbus 4 to 3.
