Driving Enforcement

Police officers in Columbia and Montour Counties are on heightened awareness... looking for aggressive driving. Now through early May... cops will be on the lookout for drivers not following traffic laws... so says PennDOT's David Thompson. Officers will be looking for speeding... drivers not obeying traffic lights and blowing through stop signs. The project is being funded by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration through PennDOT.

 

PA Ag Budget
Pennsylvania farmers want to see more money for agriculture in the state budget and more protection for landowners who lease drilling rights. The Pennsylvania Farm Bureau is calling for $2.8 - million more than Governor Tom Corbett has proposed for Penn State ag research and cooperative extension. The bureau also wants lawmakers to prevent well operators from getting around the royalty floor by charging fees back to landowners who lease drilling rights. President Carl Shaffer says it's not widespread yet, but there's concern it could grow.

 

Tourism

There is a National Parks Service report just out... showing that national parks, monuments, trails and historic sites pump more than $444 – million into the PA economy each year. And Craig Dalby of the NPS says park service lands are connected to about 7,000 Pennsylvania jobs. The report says 39% of visitor spending supports jobs in restaurants... grocery and convenience stores. Lodging accounts for 27%... and other amusement and recreation services account for 20% of spending.

 

Broken Boomer Bones

Two Geisinger Health System hospitals are among only five in the nation to earn the highest certification for knowing how to make the best of bad breaks. Dr. Michael Suk of the Orthopedic Surgery department for Geisinger Health System, says maturing Baby Boomers are expected to produce epidemic numbers of hip and other geriatric fractures. The two hospital's making the grade are Geisinger Medical Center in Danville and its Wyoming Valley center in Wilkes-Barre...

 

Hazleton Slashing

Hazleton police has locked up a woman who allegedly tried to stab a man Monday night. The incident happening in the 500 block of North Sherman Court. 26 – year old Tracy McMurrian of Hazleton used a large knife to slash the unidentified man. Right now... McMurrian faces assault charges.

 

NEPA Unemployment

Unemployment in the Wilkes-Barre / Scranton area has dipped to a five year low. The Department of Labor and Industry says the jobless rate fell fourth tenths of a percent to 7-point-7 percent in February... the lowest it's been since January of 2009. The latest figures show unemployment has fallen a full percentage point since December of last year.

 

Wilkes – Barre Masonic Temple

Fire investigators are trying to figure out what caused a Tuesday afternoon blaze which damaged the Masonic Temple on North Franklin Street in Wilkes – Barre. The building was empty at the time the fire broke out on the first floor... but it spread quickly throughout the four story building. No one was hurt in battling the afternoon fire at the Masonic Temple.

 

March Revenue

Pennsylvania still isn't out of the woods when it comes to tax revenues. Revenue Secretary Daniel Meuser says the state collected $4.2 - billion in general fund revenue in March... but that was nearly $21 - million less than anticipated. Overall... fiscal year to date collections total $20 – billion... about a half of a percent below estimate. The figures released as state lawmakers formulate a budget for the next fiscal year which begins July 1st.

BU Baseball

The Bloomsburg University baseball team played a double header Tuesday afternoon in Shippensburg. In game one... Bloomsburg losing a heart breaker 3 to 2.... in the nightcap... Bloomsburg came back to defeat Shippensburg 7 to 6. The Huskies are back in action Wednesday afternoon with a doubleheader at West Chester.

 

HS Softball

In high school girls softball from Tuesday... Muncy downed Benton 12 to 5... Bloomsburg blanked Sullivan County 19 to nothing... Central Columbia defeated Warrior Run 3 to 1... it was St. John Neumann over Millville 15 to 4... and Southern Columbia downed Hughesville 7 to nothing.

 

MLB

In Major League Baseball Tuesday night... the Texas Rangers got by the Philadelphia Phillies 3 to 2. Game three of the series is tonight at 8:05. Coverage on the WHLM Stations begins with the pregame show at 7:30.

 

Other games

The New York Yankees played their season opener Tuesday night in Houston... with the Astro's defeating the Yankees 6 to 2.

 

Women's Final Four

The women's college basketball final four is now set. In regional finals Tuesday night... Maryland just getting by Louisville 76 – 73... and Stanford beat North Carolina 74 – 65. Maryland and Stanford will join Connecticut and Notre Dame in the Final Four Sunday in Nashville.
