An early Wednesday morning fire in Danville extensively damaged a home along DL & W Avenue... right across the street from the Giant Market. The alarm sounded around midnight... and it's believed everyone inside the home escaped safely. Pictures posted on the Facebook page of Montour Fire Wire shows smoke pouring from the two – story structure. At last report... the cause of the fire remains under investigation.
Welcoming a home town hero back to Berwick. For the past couple of weeks we've been following the trilogy of Berwick's own Jayson Terdiman as he competed in the double Luge in the Winter Olympics in Sochi. Now... a huge homecoming parade is planned for Saturday in Berwick... so says Amy Shortledge from the Columbia – Montour Chamber of Commerce. That parade begins at 1 O'clock Saturday afternoon at the Berwick – Briar Creek Township line... and proceeds north to the Berwick High School.
Budget / Flat Funding
Proposed flat funding of the commonwealth's four state-related universities would trigger tuition increases across the board. Penn State, Pittsburgh, Temple and Lincoln universities agreed in front of the Senate Appropriations Committee, that their tuition's would go up by at least three percent, if they continue to receive flat funding in the next budget. Retiring PSU president Dr. Rodney Erickson says deferred maintenance and faculty recruitment and retention would also suffer. Lincoln University loses students to tuition hikes because they can't afford to stay there.
Budget / Courts
The state's chief justice says level funding for the court system will not be enough next year. WHLM's Cathy Clark says the courts have modernized, cut costs and improved the collection of fees, fines, costs and restitution. But Chief Justice Ronald Castille told the House Appropriations committee they need $25 million more than what Governor Tom Corbett has proposed in his budget for next year. He says it would have a devastating impact on the budget to try to maintain level funding.
If you haven't figured out or filed your income tax return... time is a wastin'. Professional tax preparer Kim Schooley of Danville says many earners with higher incomes are affected the most by new tax laws. Schooley says you're returns must be filed by April 15th... or you can request an extension from the IRS.
A former Catholic School... turned into a sports academy... is in ruins after a fire tore through the building this week. Authorities say whoever started the fire at the Hazleton Sports Academy Fusion on North Wyoming Street apparently also took cash... copper pipes and security cameras. The Academy was aimed at kids to teach them sports such as basketball... cycling... as well as track and field. Cause of the fire remains a mystery.
Some tense moments in the air for some US Airways passengers on a commuter flight from Manchester, New Hampshire to Philadelphia on Tuesday. The flight had to make an emergency landing at the Wilkes – Barre / Scranton Airport when the plane developed trouble with the trim... which helps pilots fly the plane with more precision. No one was hurt in the emergency landing... and passengers either grabbed rental cars or took a bus to get to Philadelphia.
New jobs are coming to Luzerne County. C3i says it's expanding... opening a call center in Plains Township... and company officials want to hire 250 people. C3i is a technical support company... and the new center would be it's third location in the county. The first 100 jobs are expected to be filled as soon as possible.
There is one less Democrat in the race to grab that party's gubernatorial nomination. Max Myers says he'll withdraw from the crowded field... since donations haven't come in as expected. His day job is that of a Pentecostal minister near Mechanicsburg. Seven other candidates remain in the race for the nomination... one of which hopes to take on Governor Corbett in the November general election.
High School BB Playoffs
The Danville boys' and girls' basketball teams played District 4 Class AAA semifinal games last night in Shamokin. WHLM's Jim Doyle reports the Central Blue Jays boy's team downed Danville 64 – 48. The Danville Girl's taking on Shikellamy. Danville coming out on top 52 – 42. In a District 4 Class AA boys semifinal last night at Milton... Lewisburg defeated Southern Columbia 49 – 35.
More High School BB Playoffs
There will be a triple header of girls basketball playoff action Wednesday night at the McCloskey Center in Danville. At 5 o'clock Millville plays Saint John Neumann In a District 4 Class A semifinal. At 6:30 Central Columbia faces Warrior Run in a Class AA semifinal. The final game of the night will be the other Class AA semifinal... Mount Carmel against Montoursville.
The Bloomsburg University men's and women's basketball teams closed out their regular season Wednesday with a pair of games against Kutztown at the Nelson Field House. The Women won 88-68. The Men lost their game 73-64. You can hear the details with Jim Doyle in the WHLM Husky Post Game Report:
The men will face Kutztown again on Saturday in the first round of PSAC playoffs. Tipoff is 2 PM. We'll be on the air with the pregame show at 1:40.
In top 25 college basketball Tuesday night... top ranked Florida defeated Vanderbilt 57 – 54... and Duke downed Virginia Tech 66 – 48.
