Danville Flood Gates
Danville will get an opportunity to check out part of it's flood control system next week. On Monday night... the contractor that built the borough's dike closure project will have a trial run at Routes 11 and 54... so says administrator Dan Knorr. That means Route 11 will be closed from 7 PM through 4 AM Tuesday morning.... prompting a detour which will be clearly marked.
A Coal Township woman is charged with allegedly taking money earmarked for the family who lost their daughter in a Shamokin fire last December. Authorities say Victoria Fortune established a donation page on the internet for the family of 13 – year old Melissa Pangburn. She collected about $1,200... allegedly spending half on herself. Fortune was arraigned on the theft charges this week.
Kessler / Gilberton
Remember that Gilberton police chief who created such a controversy last summer... using borough issued weapons... and ranting profanities on You Tube. Mark Kessler is no longer police chief of that Schuylkill County borough. Gilberton and Kessler have reached a settlement. That was confirmed by Mayor Mary Lou Hannon. Kessler has been off the job since last July without pay... days after the You Tube video surfaced on the internet.
Jay Paterno says he'll seek the Democratic nomination for Lt. Governor. Paterno is the son of ex – Penn State football coach Joe Paterno. Right now... Paterno is circulating petitions in order to get on the May 20th primary ballot. Lt. Governor candidates run separately of gubernatorial candidates in the primary... and together in the general election.
Student debt loads and increased difficulties in paying for a higher education, were points made by the State System of Higher Education at a budget hearing before the House Appropriations. WHLM's B.J. Small is reporting the debt load for students in the PA State System of Higher Education's fourteen universities is below the national average. But the gap is closing quickly and the governor is proposing flat funding for next year. Chancellor Frank Brogan, says that threatens the futures of PASSHE schools. PASSHE gets 27 percent of its funding from the state and is facing a $61 - million deficit. It is asking for a four percent increase.
Winter Olympian Jayson Terdiman of Berwick has had ten day to think about his performance in the double Luge at Sochi. Terdiman said he and his partner has had better days at the track... but to come in 11th... that's not too shabby. Terdiman will return to the United State next week... spend a couple of days in Lake Placid in upstate New York before returning home to Berwick to take part in a parade in his honor next Saturday.
We've had a milder flu season than last year but the CDC says this one has hit young and middle age adults the hardest. The surge in the H1N1 flu was especially hard on younger and middle age adults. People ages 18 to 64 represent a higher proportion of the hospitalizations and deaths according to CDC Director Dr. Tom Frieden. He says a low vaccination rate among those groups played a role. Those who were hospitalized were also more likely to have an underlying medical condition like lung disease, asthma, diabetes or obesity.
Wilkes – Barre Fight
Wilkes – Barre police are searching for a suspect in a stabbing outside the GAR High School Wednesday night. Cops say a fight broke out on Lehigh Street following a basketball game. That's when a 17 – year old teenager was stabbed. That person... taken to the hospital... treated for the wound.
Authorities say the owner of a large metal overhang at the Sunoco on West Broad Street in Hazleton is responsible for taking it down. The large roof over the pumps collapsed this week after the snow over the past couple of weeks placed too much weight on the structure and buckling it.
State regulators report that Marcellus Shale natural gas production in Pennsylvania topped three trillion cubic feet in 2013. That's more than double the previous year's production, and the energy equivalent of over 500 million barrels of oil. The Department of Environmental Protection reported the production figures. The Marcellus Shale is a gas-rich formation deep underground that extends across several states, but most of the current production is in Pennsylvania.

In girls high school basketball playoff action Thursday night... in a District 4 Class A quarterfinal... Central Columbia Downed Muncy 47 – 45... In a District 2 AAA game... Pittston Area defeated Berwick 46 – 28...
Boys HS Basketball
The Central Columbia boys were at home Friday night against Shikellamy in a District 4 Class AAA quarterfinal game. Central took Shik to a 50-33 win that took shape in the last quarter. Listen to the details with Jim Doyle in the WHLM High School Hoops report:
