*WHLM Traffic Advisory*

 

** Bloomsburg Public Works will be clearing the snow from public and permit parking lots in downtown Bloomsburg starting early Wednesday morning at 2 AM. If your vehicle is left in one of these areas overnight it will be ticketed and towed:

 

Zone C - Permit Area of the Bloomsburg Diner lot

Zone J - All of the Hoppes lot

Zone I - Permit Area of the West Pine Ave lot

Zone E - Pine Ave lot behind Rose Marie's

And all spaces South of Pine Avenue

 

You may park at any meter that is not in one of these areas, or on Main Street. Permit holders parked on Main Street or in a temporary spot must be moved by Noon on Wednesday. Other zones to be cleared will be announced on Wednesday.

 

Catawissa Bust

Two men are in the Columbia County Prison in Bloomsburg... after they were charged with operating a suspected meth lab in Catawissa Monday. 32 – year old Larry Thompson and 30 – year old Matthew Crusan were busted by police after a raid on Crusan's apartment.. and Thompson's Jeep... in the 200 – block of Main Street. Both are facing a long list of charges... and were arraigned before District Judge Rusty Lawton... and remanded to the prison in lieu of $75,000 straight cash bail. Thompson and Crusan face a preliminary hearing later this month.

 

Berwick / Snow

With all the snow storms we've had this winter... there are many communities who are either stretching... or running their snow removal budget on fumes. That's not the case in the borough of Berwick. That word from Borough Manager Robert Hivish who says snow removal money comes from the State Liquid Fuel tax they receive. Hivish says the big drawback to all the snow removal is the more money spent... the less the borough has for summer road projects which begin in the spring.

 

Big Event

The Community Government Association on the Bloomsburg University campus is gearing up for the so – called “Big Event.” It's designed to get University students involved with local residents to help them do projects around their properties.... so says Justine Albright... appearing on the WHLM Morning Buzz to explain the program. This year's “Big Event” takes place March 29th. A year ago... an estimated 1,700 students turned out to take part in the project.

 

Wal – Mart Fire

Firefighters in Schuylkill County were called out early Tuesday morning to a Wal – Mart near Hometown... in Rush Township. The blaze was centered in the lawn and garden section of the store. Right now... authorities are searching for four men seen on security video... and are calling the fire an arson.

 

Infant Death

Nanticoke police are investigating the death of a 2 – month old infant last Friday. Littlee Jaxon Eckrote died Friday in a home in an ally behind Noble Street. An autopsy was preformed Saturday. Police want to know if the child died of an accident or a crime.

 

Penn State President

Penn State has officially named its next president. Florida State’s Eric Barron has strong ties as a longtime professor and dean, was introduced Monday after Penn State’s trustees unanimously approved his appointment. Barron has been the president at Florida State since 2010, and he will succeed Rodney Erickson, who, instead of retiring, took over the reins in November 2011 as the Jerry Sandusky scandal rocked the university and community.

 

WHLM Sports

High School Basketball

In high school basketball Monday night, the Heartland Conference championship games were played at Montoursville High School. In the girls final Mount Carmel beat Warrior Run 40-35. In the boys final, Saint John Neumann remained unbeaten with a 64-58 win over Loyalsock.

 

District 4

The District 4 basketball playoffs begin Tuesday night. One area team is in action. The Millville boys play at Sayre in a Class A first round game.

 

Central Basketball

The Central Columbia boys, with a regular season record of 16 and 6, are the number 2 seed in the Class AAA tournament. The Bluejays are at home against Shikellamy Friday night in a quarterfinal game which starts at 7. Coverage on the WHLM Stations begins with the pregame show at 6:45.

 

BU Basketball

Fans are encouraged to wear pink to Wednesday night's Bloomsburg University men's and women's basketball games against West Chester at Nelson Field House. It's all part of the Play 4 Kay Project in support of breast cancer awareness. Kay Yow was a Hall of Fame women's basketball coach who died from Stage 4 breast cancer in 2009. There will be several giveaways including a prize basket as part of tomorrow night's festivities.

 

College Basketball

Unbeaten Syracuse remains the top ranked men's college basketball team in this week's Associated Press top 25 poll. Florida is second; unbeaten Wichita State is third; Arizona is 4th and Duke is 5th.
