** The Borough of Berwick is extending it's parking ban due to the storm. There is no parking on the side of the streets with even number addresses until noon time. From noon until 11 PM... no parking on the side of the streets with odd number addresses...
** - The senior centers operated by the Columbia - Montour Office of Aging will be closed today. However, there will be Meals on Wheels.
Two Children Dead
Two children died Friday morning in a grinding two vehicle crash around 9 O'clock Friday morning on State Route 487 near Forks... in Fishing Creek Township. Our media partner Newswatch 16 is reporting that a mini – van carrying a mother and her three children was southbound... when the driver lost control... sliding sideways. The mini – van was struck broadside by a northbound Ford E-350 work truck. Two of the children died at the scene... while the driver and another child were transported to Geisinger Medical Center in Danville for treatment. Reporter Julie Sidoni says the family is from the Berwick area. Now... state police from the Bloomsburg sub – station are reconstructing what happened.
Snow Storm Folo
It's the sound all of us heard Thursday.... snow plows making their way through the streets of boroughs and towns. Plow crews trying to clear and salt main and side streets during a lull in the storm. They were re-enforced by pick up trucks with plows who moved snow off out of driveways and parking lots. Follow up plowing is expected to take place today up and down the Susquehanna Valley.
National Guard / Corbett
All of eastern Pennsylvania got battered Thursday... into Friday morning... by Mother Nature who produced snow, sleet and freezing rain. That prompted Governor Corbett to call out the military.... with the governor telling reporters that PA National Guard member are ready to help if needed.
The borough of Nanticoke is nearly out of salt to spread on their streets and roads... and the major problem... their next delivery is weeks away. Public Works crews have about ten tons of rock salt remaining... as well as 20 tons of other anti – skid material. Government officials hope to get through the latest storm... with the sun helping melt the snow and ice on the roads.
The Bloomsburg Town Council has given councilman Bill Kreischer the okay to talk with Columbia County officials about the possibility of hiring a Humane Officer. That person would deal with unwanted animals from Berwick to Danville. The overall plan would be the construction of a shelter... possibly on a piece of county – owned land off Back Branch road in Mt. Pleasant Township.
A Life Flight medical helicopter operated by Danville – based Geisinger Health System... was forced to make an emergency landing at the Wilkes – Barre / Scranton Airport this week. A GHS spokesman said the helicopter was transferring a patient from Tyler Memorial Hospital in Tunkhannock to Geisinger in Danville when the pilot experienced a so – called “mechanical abnormality.” The chopper landed safely and the patient was taken to Geisinger by a second helicopter.
Miss PA Teen
She's 16... she attends Cyber school and she's Miss Pennsylvania Teen USA. Sydney Robertson of Montoursville spent some time at the Janet Weis Children's Hospital at the Geisinger Medical Center in Danville this week... reading stories to pediatric patients. Sydney has held the title since late last year. Ms. Robertson will compete in the Miss Teen USA pageant... with dozens of other young women this summer.
State Treasurer Rob McCord has received the endorsement of one of the largest unions in the state. McCord getting the backing in his run for the Democratic gubernatorial nomination from the Pennsylvania State Education Association. Earlier he was endorsed by the United Food and Commercial Workers local 1776... the teamsters union and AFSCME.. the state's largest employees union. McCord wants to square off against Republican Governor Tom Corbett this fall.
The Bloomsburg University men's and women's basketball teams play at East Stroudsburg Saturday afternoon. The men's team is in second place in the PSAC East trailing East Stroudsburg by two games.
The Husky women's team will take a 12 game winning streak into Saturday's game. The doubleheader starts with the women's game at 1 o'clock. Coverage on the WHLM Stations begins with the pregame show at 12:40.
In high school basketball,weather permitting, the Heartland Conference tournament semifinals will be held Friday night. In the boys semifinals at Montoursville... Loyalsock will play Shamokin and Saint John Neumann will go against Lewisburg. In the girls semifinals at Shamokin... Mount Carmel will play Muncy and Danville will play Warrior Run. The finals will be Saturday night at Williamsport High School.
Boys HS Basketball
