New Zoning District
The Bloomsburg Town Council last night okayed a move to established a Business Campus Zoning District... as well as a companion sign ordinance. The approval came following a public hearing. The only area to fall under the new zoning law is a project where the old Bloomsburg Mills once stood and is being developed by Matt Zoppetti... and the issue of signage came up. That produced a heated exchange between town attorney Jack Mihalik and Zoppetti. Whatever the differences... the Town will continue to tweak the laws pertaining to the new zoning district.
Berwick High School grad Jayson Terdiman goes for the gold tomorrow at the winter Olympics in Sochi when he competes in the double luge. Since news surfaced he was headed to Russia... Terdiman says his fan base has grown quickly on social media. Meantime... there is a community – wide pep rally scheduled for Wednesday morning at the Reliance Fire Hall in Berwick. That rally starts at 5 AM...
The Bloomsburg University Accounting Association is providing free tax help to low to moderate income individuals to their families. The Volunteer Income Tax Assistance program began Monday night at the Wesley United Methodist Church. Appearing on the Monday edition of the WHLM Morning Buzz Brian Kutz said the service is for individuals and families with an income of less than $52,000 a year. The Vita program involves an estimated 100 students and takes place every Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday... except the week of March 17th... between 4 and 8 PM... until April 9th.
NEPA Gas Prices
The average price of a gasoline across northeastern Pennsylvania is holding steady. The latest Triple A Fuel Gauge report shows that self – serve, unleaded regular is averaging $3.47 – a - gallon. That's up a penny from the weekend... and the same as it was a week ago. However, prices may be going up a tick due to refinery shut downs for maintenance... and a change over from a winter to a summer blend of gasoline.
Hugo Selenski won't be going on trial next month after all. If you recall... Selenski... his former attorney Shelley Centini and a defense investigator were indicted last month for witness tampering. Selinski is accused in the 2002 deaths of two people... found buried in the backyard of his Kingston Township home. Now... it appears his trial will be held in May with a new lawyer handling his defense.
The suspended Dean of Students at Coughlin High School in Wilkes – Barre... has been charged with having an on – going sexual relationship with a student. 47 – year old Stephen Stahl of Hunlock Creek is free on bail. The alleged incident happened 10 – years ago, but the allegations surfaced December 31st when the victim came forward. Stahl was suspended from his school duties late last week.
A Wilkes – Barre District school teacher has been placed on paid administrative leave. 55 – year old Karen Block of Plains Township pleaded guilty to animal cruelty charges earlier this month. Court records show she placed bowls of anti – freeze around her property to poison cats.
Sam Smith to Retire
Pennsylvania House Speaker Sam Smith is expected to retire rather than face a second conservative primary challenge to his office. That word coming from two well-connected Republican lobbyists. Smith... a Republican from Jefferson County... will forgo a contentious Republican primary after being instrumental in the passage of Governor Corbett's $2.6 - billion dollar transportation bill late last year. A year earlier, he’d been targeted as an establishment, big government Republican by unknown tea party challenger Chris Dush.

In boys' high school basketball Monday night, Bloomsburg was at home against Selinsgrove. WHLM's Jim Doyle says that Selinsgrove defeated Bloomsburg 68 – 54. In other boys basketball action Monday night... Southern Columbia defeated South Williamsport 70 – 66... it was Central Columbia over Warrior Run 68 – 41... and Muncy downed Columbia Montour Vo Tech 68 – 35...

In girls basketball... Dallas defeated Berwick 59 – 40... and Sullivan County downed Columbia Montour Vo – Tech 41 – 21..
