Terdiman Rally

The eyes of the sports world will be watching Berwick's Jayson Terdiman when he goes for the gold this Wednesday in the double Luge in Sochi. Amy Shortlidge of the Columbia – Montour Chamber of Commerce says a pep rally will be held at the Reliance Fire Hall on West Third Street in Berwick starting at 5 AM. There will be fun, food and refreshments at the community – wide pep rally.... including live shots with WBRE – TV personality Jasmine Brooks.

 

Millard / Budget Hearings

The house appropriations committee will begin hearing today from state department heads who have a stake in Governor Corbett's $29.4 - billion dollar proposed budget. State Representative David Millard of Berwick... who sits on the committee... says it is an exhaustive process. At the same time.... the state Senate appropriations committee begins the same long and grueling hearings... trying to figure out what stays in departmental budgets... and what goes.

 

Hazleton Playground

The Hazleton City Council is attempting to secure a $100,000 state grant to spruce up the Fifth Street Playground. It's been there for generations... and council wants to ensure it will be there for years to come. If the grant is secured... the money will be used for LED lighting... security cameras... new fencing... a safety surface and new playground equipment.

 

Hazleton CAP

It appears the Civil Air Patrol based at the Hazleton Airport was not included in Governor Corbett's budget he delivered to lawmakers last week. The Civil Air Patrol is an auxiliary of the United States Air Force and it's members are involved in search and rescue operations across northeastern Pennsylvania.

Now... Patrol personnel say they will continue their fund raising activities throughout the year in order to continue their mission.

 

Shamokin Twp Shooting

A Milton woman is fighting for her life in the Geisinger Medical Center in Danville after she was shot over the weekend. Police first believed Salicia Yost was involved in an accident along Irish Valley Road in Shamokin Township... but later discovered she was shot. Now... police are search for a person of interest.

 

Body Found

A neighboring Schuylkill County man is dead.... discovered in the snow over the weekend. The body of 23 – year old Nicholas McCabe of Shenandoah was discovered Sunday morning between Lehigh and Bower Streets. Now... an autopsy is scheduled for Monday to determine the exact cause of death.

 

Liquor Issue

While state lawmakers try to hammer out an agreement on the liquor privatization issue in closed door talks, it appears public attitudes might be shifting. Support for privatization has weakened over the past year according to the latest Franklin and Marshall College poll, but more significant is evidence of a possible shift in what voters prefer. When asked if they support selling state stores to private companies or modernizing the system - the results are almost even. Last May, there was a double digit difference in favor of privatization over modernization.

BU Wrestling

In their final home match of the season, the Bloomsburg University wrestling team beat George Mason 33-6 Sunday afternoon at the Nelson Field House. Senior Mike Dessino led the way by recording a pin at 174 pounds for his 100th career win. The Huskies will be back in action February 16th and 17th at the National Wrestling Duals at Ohio State.

 

HS Basketball

This is the final week for high school basketball's regular season. In boys action Monday night, Bloomsburg hosted Selinsgrove. The Seals took the win in that game, by a score of 68-54. Listen to the details with WHLM's Jim Doyle in the High School Hoops Report:

College BB

In college basketball Sunday... ninth ranked Michigan State was upset by Wisconsin 60-58. In other action. Top ranked Syracuse overpowered Clemson 57 – 44... and St. John's defeated Creighton 70 to 65.

 

NBA

In the NBA Sunday night... the Los Angeles Clippers downed the Philadelphia 76ers 123 – 78.
