Jayson Terdiman / Olympics

Opening ceremonies to be held today for the 2014 Winter Olympics in Russia. A Columbia County athlete is in Sochi where he'll compete next week in the double luge. Berwick graduate Jason Terdiman hopes to go downhill for the gold next Wednesday. Terdiman describes the luge as one wild ride. Meantime... there is a pep rally for Terdiman next Wednesday morning at the Reliance Fire Hall on West Third Street in Berwick. It begins at 5 AM... and the public is welcome to drop in.


Cheryl Cerasoli

Funeral services will be held Saturday morning for Cheryl Cerasoli who founded... then became executive director of Berwick – based Beyond Violence... a shelter for battered women. She died this week at the age of 69. Ginny Crake of the Berwick Area United Ways says Beyond Violence came along at the right time. A visitation will be held Friday afternoon starting at 5 O'clock at the McMichael – Rarigh and Baker Funeral home on east Third Street.


BU National Women's

It's a big day on the Bloomsburg University campus Saturday. It's National women and girls sports day... a time when girls and women get a chance to interact with BU women's athletes. The event begins with registration starting at 9:30 AM.


Geisinger / Glenn Steele

The President and Chief Executive officer of Geisinger Health System has been named again to the US Congressional Budget Office's panel of health advisers. Dr. Glenn Steele who has been an adviser for the past two years... is one of 22 nationwide experts in the health care field to be named to the panel. The panel provides the CBO with understanding on research... as well as health care delivery and financing.


Chamber Awards

The Columbia – Montour Chamber of Commerce holding their annual meeting Thursday night.. in Briar Creek Township... recognizing some of their members for their contributions. The Small Business of the year award going to InnoTek Computer Consulting of Bloomsburg... with PPL Corporation recognized at the Large Business of the year. First Keystone Community Bank earned the Community Progress Award... and the Outstanding Citizen Award was presented to Tim Wagner... the owner of Wagner's Trophies and Engraveables of Bloomsburg.


Federal Grant

The way has been paved for the Wilkes – Barre Fire Department to hire eight new firefighters. It's made possible through a $1.2 million federal grant. Fire chief Jay Delaney says the money will also be used to reopen a station on Parrish Street. It will mean better response time to the Rolling Mill Hill... the Heights and the south sections of the city.


Wilkes – Barre Cops

There are ten new police officers on the streets of Wilkes – Barre. All were sworn in Thursday. The new hires include former Scranton police chief Dan Duffy.... who wanted to get back to doing basic police work.


McAdoo Water

McAdoo has a problem. The tiny community five miles south of Hazleton has a problem with frozen water pipes. It's affected at least 25 property owners... many of which have to rely on neighbors... carrying buckets of water for drinking... and to flush toilets. For many in McAdoo... spring can't get to northern Schuylkill County quickly enough.


Stabbing Sentence

A Luzerne County man is headed to prison after his conviction of stabbing his girlfriend at Kraft Food in the Hanover Industrial Park last May. Now... Fred Koptcho from Dallas will spend the next four to ten years in prison. He was found guilty last December.


Budget / Education
Increased education spending and optimistic revenue projections in Governor Tom Corbett's proposed budget for 2014-15, leave questions on how the money is to be spent and where it might come from.
Franklin and Marshall College political science professor Terry Madonna says the additional 240 million dollars for education is a targeted block grant and so may not help with basic school district budgets. As for $2 billion in revenue to cover the current debt and projected expenditures, Madonna isn't sure the economy can produce it.


WHLM Sports

BU Basketball

The Bloomsburg University men's and women's basketball teams played at Cheyney Thursday night. WHLM's Jim Doyle tells us that Bloomsburg defeated Cheney 62 – 56. In the Women's contest... Bloomsburg downed Cheney 89 – 49. The Bloomsburg University basketball teams will play Shippensburg Saturday afternoon at the Nelson Field House starting with the women's game at 1 o'clock. Coverage on the WHLM Stations begins with the pregame show at 12:40.


HS Boys Basketball

In boys high school basketball Thursday night... Jersey Shore downed Danville 83 – 74.


HS Girls Basketball 

In girls basketball... Shamokin defeated Danville 43 – 38.


High School Basketball

In girls basketball on Friday night, in a game you heard on the WHLM Stations, Central Columbia beat Southern Columbia by a score of 49-25. Our next high school hoops broadcast will be Monday night, when the Bloomsburg boys host Selinsgrove. Coverage starts with the pregame show at 7:10.


BU Wrestling

The Bloomsburg University wrestling team takes on George Mason Sunday afternoon at 2 0'clock at the Nelson Field House. It's the Huskies final home match of the season.
