Governor Corbett has taken the wraps off a proposed $29.4 billion budget for the 2014 – 15 fiscal year.That's 3.3% more than the state's current spending plan. The governor... pointing to extra revenue from an expansion in gaming... such as adding Keno to the mix... so says state representative David Millard. Meantime.. hearings are scheduled to get underway Monday as state department heads make an appearances in front of the House and Senate appropriations committees... justifying every cent of their proposed operating budget.
Pennsylvania casino regulators are blaming bad winter weather for a big drop in revenue from slot machines. The state's 12 casinos reported collecting $171.8 million from slot machines in January, down 8.7 percent from a year ago. The biggest loser... Harrah's Philadelphia in Chester County.
Allentown – based PPL stayed ahead of the Wednesday's storm... keeping electricity flowing through the lines. Even now... the utility's Terri MacBride says line crews are in position to get to a trouble spot quickly and safely. MacBride said Columbia and Montour Counties dodged the bullet... with no power outages reported. But the biggest trouble spot appears to be Lancaster County with an estimated 16,000 subscribers without power since Wednesday.
Despite the flu bug peaking across the U.S.... it has yet to level out in central and eastern Pennsylvania. That word from Sheila Packer... of the Community Health and Wellness Clinic at Evangelical Hospital in Lewisburg. Ms. Packer says flu shots are still available. Ms. Packer says there is a cost for the shot... but in the long run it's worth it... if you can prevent getting the flu this winter.
A 34 – year old Hazleton woman is jailed... after police say she allegedly struck her 9 – year old son in the back with a plastic spatula. Holly Johnson was arrested at her Hazle Township home after her son when to the school nurse complaining of pain... and that's when bruises were discovered. Johnson is facing a child endangerment charge.
An apartment complex with a troubled past has agreed to pay a $17,000 fine to the city of Wilkes – Barre. The owners of Sherman Hills say they'll fork over the money for not complying with rental inspection regulations. The city had originally wanted $33,000 in fines, but were reduced when management began correcting what was wrong.
Murder Suspect Held
An Allentown man is in custody... held in a North Carolina jail without bond... in the death of 35 – year old Angelia Steigerwalt of Tamaqua. 24 – year old Darrell Heath was taken into custody over the weekend driving Steigerwalt's Buick. The woman's body was found Saturday near Jim Thorpe by firefighters who were called to extinguish a brush fire. She was last seen Friday afternoon when she left for her job in Fogelsville.
In a pair of games that were re-scheduled due to the Winter weather this week, Bloomsburg's Men & Women had a strong showing on the road at Cheyney. The Women won 89-49. The Men won 62-56. Listen to the details from the night's games in the WHLM Husky Post-Game Report with Jim Doyle:
