We woke up Wednesday morning to an estimated four to six inches of snow on the ground across the Susquehanna Valley... and freezing rain by midday. A storm system in the middle of the country is pulling Gulf of Mexico moisture into cold air, dumping a wintry mess from Missouri to western New England. Ever since the snow began to fall late Tuesday night... Town and Borough public works crews have been out plowing the streets. That's the same for PennDOT who have been plowing and treating all the major highways.
Allentown – based PPL is staying in front of the latest winter storm. The utility says crews are positioned to respond quickly and safely to any situation which may arise. Spokesperson Terri MacBride says Monday's storm left behind heavy snow clinging to trees... and raised the possibility for customers to endure power outages due to the snow.... ice and freezing rain. Thus far, there are no reported outages in Columbia and Montour Counties... but the hardest hit area seems to be Lancaster County where an estimated 45,000 subscribers are without juice. MacBride says if you do have a power outage... you can tell the utility by calling 1 – 800 – DIAL – PPL.
The United Way of Columbia County in Bloomsburg has fallen short of their fall campaign goal... falling about $110,000 short. That word from Executive Director John Thomas... so there is a big push on this month to fill the void. Thomas gave no specific reason for the short – fall.... but the organization has until the end of the month to get the cash or pledges so they can wrap up their 2013 campaign.
Governor Corbett has unveiled his budget plan for the fiscal year which begins July 1st. The Governor pitched a general fund budget plan to the state legislature that totals $29.4 billion... that's almost a billion dollars higher than the spending plan in place for the current year. The administration is projecting a 4% increase in revenue collections next year - an aggressive forecast, but one that will include some additional new revenue sources, like small games of chance at bars and taverns. The budget plan includes new money for educational block grants and college scholarships...and the governor is renewing his call for public pension reform.
Bring Stuie Home
A group of Berwick residents... with a desire to bring home a Stuart tank... built at the former A-C-F plant have started canvassing the community through a letter writing campaign trying to raise funds. Columbia County Commissioner David Kovach... who makes up part of the committee... says the letter is direct and outlines their goals. The committee has found three of the tanks in the northeast... and with the donations in hand they can negotiate with current owners in order to bring home one of the 15,200 tanks produced in Berwick.
A 34 – year old Hazleton woman is jailed... after police say she allegedly struck her 9 – year old son in the back with a plastic spatula. Holly Johnson was arrested at her Hazle Township home after her son when to the school nurse complaining of pain... and that's were bruises were discovered. Johnson is facing a child endangerment charge.
The congregation of the Holy Ghost Polish National Catholic Church in Shenandoah has held their last service in the 91 year old building. That happened Tuesday. The church has been loosing members over the years. The building will remain a religious symbol... with the structure becoming a Mennonite church.
Southern Gym Dedicated
The home for Southern Columbia Area boys and girls basketball was named the Charles T. Nesbitt Gym Tuesday night in ceremonies prior to the boys varsity game against Selinsgrove. The 90 year old Nesbitt, who was the school's first athletic director and served in that capacity for 26 years, received a standing ovation after his brief acceptance speech.

Girls HS Basketball
In girls basketball last night... St. John Neumann downed Bloomsburg 53 – 45... it was Montoursville over Southern Columbia 43 – 35... Millville South Williamsport... and Berwick defeated Wyoming Valley West 42 – 32.
Wednesday night's Bloomsburg University men's and women's basketball game at Cheney State... has been postponed until Thursday due to the weather. The night begins with the women's game at 6 O'clock. Coverage on the WHLM Stations begins with the pregame show at 5:40.
The highest ranking men's college basketball team in action Tuesday night was 3rd ranked Florida. The final score... Florida downed Missouri 68 – 58.
