There were a lot of questions tossed at the folks from SEDA – COG and engineering group Borton – Lawson of Wilkes – Barre... dealing with that proposed flood wall around the Autoneum and Windsor Foods plant in Bloomsburg. The biggest one... how much will the 30 – million dollar flood wall raise water around residential properties... about a tenth of an inch. And those attending last night's meeting at the high school also found out construction is on the fast track. Design is expected to be completed later this year... with ground broken in 2015... and the project protecting an estimated 700 jobs by 2017.
Fairmont Twp Fire
Firemen battled a house fire overnight in near zero temperatures. The blaze was first reported around 2:30 this morning in the 300 block of Goss Road... in Fairmont Township in Luzerne County... near Sweet Valley. Local fire crews... as well as crews from Benton responded on a mutual aid basis and brought the blaze under control.
Investigators will be in Klingerstown... in Schuylkill County today... trying to figure out what started a Tuesday afternoon fire... destroying an apartment building and damaging the post office. Firemen found flames shooting through the roof of the Main Street apartment complex. One person at home made it out safely. The post office sustained water damage.
Charges keep piling up against that former Wyoming Valley West English teacher... accused of having sex with male students. Lauren Harrington – Cooper was cuffed and appeared before a Magistrate on Tuesday... this time four new charges with allegedly having inappropriate contact with students. She is now locked up with bail set at $50,000.
Williamsport Police Officer
A 32 – year old Williamsport police officer was arraigned Tuesday morning on charges of homicide by vehicle and involuntary manslaughter. Officer Jonathan Deprenda is charged in the death of 42 – year old James Robinson earlier this month. Investigators say Deprenda was on his way to assist a second officer when his cruiser collided with Robinson's car... sending it into a building... catching fire.
Deprenda was driving his cruiser at 88 miles an hour in a 35 – mile an hour zone when the crash took place. The officer is on paid administrative leave... and free on $25,000 bond.
The Senate Law and Justice Committee heard impassioned testimony Tuesday for the legalized the use of medical marijuana in Pennsylvania. WHLM's B.J. Small reports parents who say their children with seizures and epilepsy can benefit from it and medical professionals offered testimony on the use of medicinal cannabis a hearing at the Capitol. Committee minority chair Democrat Jim Ferlo of Allegheny County called for debate of Senate Bill 1182 on the Senate floor. Governor Tom Corbett says he won't back any use of medical marijuana without FDA testing and proof.
ObamaCare / Taxes
Many of us have received our W-2 forms from employers.... and have started to prepare our 2014 tax return. However, there is at least one issue tossing a chink in the armor... and that's ObamaCare... also known as the affordable care act... that word from Professional tax preparer Kim Schooley. He says filing with ObamaCare in place may affect your taxes slightly... so read you return instructions carefully or have them done by a professional.
Still no word as to who holds a half – million dollar Cash 5 ticket sold in Shickshinny for last Friday's drawing. The ticket was sold at Beertown on West Vine Street. It's worth $500,000 minus the 25% percent federal withholding tax. Whoever holds the ticket has a year to claim the money.
The Pennsylvania Turnpike is recruiting travelers to help shape the strategic planning process. WHLM Radio's Cathy Clark tells us the turnpike is looking for four thousand people to give their opinions in a series of on-line surveys over the next year. There will even be an incentive for taking part- and those who sign up will help determine what that will be in the first of the surveys. The Bloomsburg University men's and women's basketball teams played key PSAC East games Wednesday night at Millersville. The Women avenged an earlier loss with a last-second 79-77 win. The Men's team lost 88-77, bringing their streak to 13 straight losses at Millersville.
