Pope Francis has appointed a new bishop of the Diocese of Harrisburg... and that includes Columbia and Montour Counties. The Most Reverend Ronald Gainer is the 11 bishop of the Diocese. He replaces Bishop Joseph McFadden who died last May. Bishop Gainer is originally from Pottsville, but for the past eleven years has been the bishop of Lexington, Kentucky. Installation ceremonies will take place in Harrisburg March 19th.
AGAPE on East 7th Street in Bloomsburg will be keeping their office doors open overnight on evenings when the temperature dips below 25 degrees. A schedule for extended hours will be posted on AGAPE's main door. Daytime hours will run from 9:00 AM til 4:00 PM, extended overnight hours run from 8:00 PM til 7:00 AM and go into effect tonight.
The 68th annual Berwick Christmas Boulevard should have a new feel when the lights are switched on in December. Berwick Borough Council is handing the responsibility of producing the plots on Market Street over the the Berwick Christmas Boulevard Association. The Association's Victoria Detterick says she hopes to get volunteer help from years past. Ms. Detterick has assured us Santa Claus has been lined up for the 2014 Boulevard... and hopes to contact prospective sponsors soon.
The Boscov's department store in the heart of Wilkes – Barre is expected to open it's doors on time this morning. A broken water pipe... leading to a sprinkler... burst when it froze... sending water all over the first floor and into the basement. The store was closed late Thursday afternoon and last night to get the building back in shape.
Congressman Lou Barletta... a Republican from Hazleton... says he'll seek a third term to his northeast Pennsylvania seat. Barletta citing his work in his district for his decision to seek re-election. He was propelled to his house seat after serving as Hazleton Mayor from 2000 to 2010. The 57 – year old Barletta's district stretches from Luzerne County... south through Cumberland County in south central PA.
The Mayor of Ashland... in neighboring Schuylkill County... who suddenly retired as a deputy sheriff... is under investigation by Pennsylvania State Police. Our media partner... Newswatch 16 is reporting... that Dennis Kane is being investigated for Facebook messages sent to a 16 – year old boy. Kane telling Channel 16 reporter Bob Reynolds by phone that he's done nothing wrong. No word when State Police will wrap up their investigation.
Police are trying to find the person who stole the wheelchair belonging to a 70 – year old Vietnam vet from Coal Township. Martin Glover needed the chair ever since his left leg was amputated several years ago. The theft was discovered when Glover and his wife returned from the hospital. Northumberland County Office of Aging has come through... replacing Glover's wheelchair.
BU Student Representative
There is a new student representative to the Bloomsburg University Council of Trustees. She's 21 year old Shannon Phillips of Bloomsburg... appointed to the council this week by Governor Tom Corbett. Although most of her work will be locally... Ms. Phillips she'll be in Harrisburg this spring to attend a PASHEE board meeting. Phillips is a BU junior and a public relations major... replacing Marcus Fuller who is student teaching during the spring semester.
Demolition has begun on the historic Huber Breaker in Ashley... in Luzerne County. Paselo Logistics of Philadelphia... the owner of the breaker... has begun raising the structure. Already the breaker's foothouse... a coal conveyor and rotary dump building have been demolished. Still standing it the large breaker... a powerhouse and a smoke stack. The breaker has been a fixture in Ashley for generations.
A Dallas man is in the Luzerne County jail after he was charged with allegedly sexually assaulting a 14 – year old girl last year. 26 – year old Maurice Porter allegedly committed the assault inside an apartment at the troubled Sherman Hills apartment complex in Wilkes – Barre. Porter's bail has been set at $200,000.
The supervisors of Banks Township...near Hazleton... should soon have a new 2014 operating budget in place. They plan to meet Monday night at the Tresckow Fire Company starting at 6 O'clock.
As he prepares to unveil his budget for 2014-15, Governor Tom Corbett calls the funding system for schools unfair. In giving a rare preview of his next proposed budget with reporters... Mr. Corbett announcing an increase for domestic violence efforts... and also took the occasion to criticize the system of funding schools as being not what it should be. He said the state doesn't have a voice in negotiating how the funding is spent, and is not optimistic that will change. He expressed support for a funding formula bill currently in the state Senate.
A new Senate bill... authored by a Luzerne County Democrat... would streamline the process for Pennsylvania to lend and receive aid from emergency disaster responders. Senator Lisa Baker's legislation will set up a Volunteer Health Practitioner Registry System to cut red tape and permit quicker access for professionals to serve across state lines in times of disaster. Senate Bill 1235 would certify the credibility of those who would respond and allows multiple agencies to get involved in coordinating responses. Fourteen other states have adopted similar language. The PA Emergency Management Agency would regulate the location and duration of any response.
