It appears a home in the 100 block of Millville Road in Bloomsburg is beyond repair after an oil - fired furnace exploded early Wednesday. It's a story we first told you about during the morning news. Mike Harner is a neighbor to Phil and Brenda Vaughn... telling our media partner Newswatch 16 that smoke was billowing from the structure. Phil Vaughn was tossed across the room when the furnace exploded. He's okay... and so is his wife. The Vaughn's are living elsewhere until a determination is made about their home.
Berwick Christmas Boulevard
A new group will produce the 2014 version of the Berwick Christmas Boulevard in December. The Press – Enterprise is reporting in Thursday's edition... on a vote of four to one... Berwick Borough Council has taken the responsibility of the Boulevard out of the hands of the Jaycees... giving it to a newly formed group called the Berwick Christmas Boulevard Association. Members of the Association...at one time... belonged to the Jaycees. The Jaycees have had financial problems... and in 2013 had to ask the Borough for help to get the display up in time.
TV Personality Sued
A WBRE – TV personality is being sued by his former gal pal stemming from an allegedly abusive relationship that 36 – year old David Kaharchick had with Sharon Lynett. The Dunmore woman says Kaharchick cost her $26,000 during the relationship... knocking out the windshield of her car... and hitting Lynett with his fists... all following a drinking binge. Kaharchick remains on the air... hosting their afternoon show “PA Live...” and as one of the WBRE's meteorologist.
PennDOT says motorists traveling Interstate 80 eastbound in Columbia County are asked to be alert for a lane closure around mile marker 234 starting Thursday morning. Northridge Group, a hazmat company, will perform cleanup work at the scene of a truck crash that occurred there two weeks ago. The area is about half-way between the Buckhorn and Lightstreet exits.
The eastbound right lane will be closed during daylight hours for the cleanup activities, which may require three to four days to complete.
The annual Friends of the Library book sale got underway last night at the Bloomsburg Library on Market Street. The event runs through Monday afternoon.... and there is plenty of reading material to pick up... so says the organization's Mary Clapp. To take part in this year's sale... just visit the library in the 200 block of Market Street..
Nearly 2,500 miles of Pennsylvania waterways are consider "impaired" because of pollution – and a new report takes a look at possible solutions. The Chesapeake Bay Foundation says storm water runoff from blacktop and roofs in cities and suburbs is putting valuable water resources at great risk. Harry Campbell of the Foundation says some communities are tackling the problem head on. The report says in PA... the impacts in some areas include contamination of drinking water sources and property damage.
Point Twp Project
A $7.4 - million dollar sewer project for Point township has been okayed by the Pennsylvania Infrastructure Development Authority... also known as Pennvest. State Senator John Gordner of Berwick and State Representative Lynda Culver of Sunbury says the Point Township Sewer Authority will get a grant of $3.7 - million... and an equal sum in the form of a loan. The money will be used to undertake a sewage project in Lithia Springs... as well as the Ridge and Bulk Road areas of the township.
State Police at Laporte are investigating a break – in that happened this week at the Nittany Minit Mart On Route 220 in Sonestown. Investigators say someone entered the closed store through a back door... making off with cash... then fleeing the scene. If you have information about the burglary... call state police at Laporte.
That Wyoming Valley West teacher... accused of having sex with two of her students... has resigned. Lauren Harrington – Cooper sent her resignation letter to the board of education... and it was promptly accepted. Harrington – Cooper allegedly had sex with the two students in her car last year.
A Hanover Area high school teachers is headed for trial after he was accused of sexually assaulting a male student. Social studies teacher Edward Evans allegedly sexually assaulted the student in his Luzerne County home. Evans was suspended from his job when the charges first surfaced last month.
The Bloomsburg University men's and women's basketball teams played Mansfield last night at the Nelson Field House. WHLM's Jim Doyle is reporting the Lady Huskies recorded their seventh consecutive victory by defeating Mansfield 84 – 53. The men extended their record to 10 and 6 overall as they downed Mansfield 86 to 70. The Huskies next action will be Saturday afternoon at Kutztown.
