The second major cold snap of the season will bring chilly air and periods of light snow to our area over the next couple of days. The National Weather Service says a cold front will march through the region later Monday... plunging temperatures into the teens and single digits during the next few nights... with daytime highs barely getting out of the teens. And with that... snow is expected midday Tuesday.
It's been in the planning stages for a while... and Monday... the doors open to a new neurology clinic at Geisinger Bloomsburg Hospital. Geisinger's Dr. Edgar Kenton says it's designed to keep people who need treatment for neuromuscular diseases closer to their home... instead of traveling to Danville. The new 7,300 square foot facility came on line at a cost of $371,000. Next up for Geisinger – Bloomsburg... telestroke services providing stroke care through the emergency department.
NTSB Preliminary Report
A preliminary report issued by the National Transportation Safety Board says a twin – engine Piper Comanche with two Columbia County resident aboard... broke up in the air before crashing last month. Killed in the crash near Biglersville... in Adams County was the pilot.. 46 – year old Michael Bronzburg... and 17 – year old Miranda Rose... his girlfriend's daughter. The NTSB says the plane's debris field was a half – mile long leading to the crash site. The pair took off from Bloomsburg in the pre – dawn darkness of December 26th and were en-route to South Carolina when the plane ran into trouble. A final report won't be ready for another nine to twelve months.
Don Engle Remembered
Teaching young people about life. That's what the late Don Engle did when he was a teacher... a coach and athletic director at Central Columbia High School in South Centre Township. Mr. Engle passed away last week... and he is remembered by close friend and superintendent Harry Mathias. A memorial service for Don Engle to be held Monday at noon time at the Roger Bunnell Funeral Home on Market Street in Bloomsburg.
A 66 – year old Shenandoah area man is in jail in neighboring Schuylkill County after he allegedly shot an killed his neighbor of 35 years over the weekend. Police say Ronald Kozak got into an argument with 60 – year old Joseph Boris. That's when Kozak allegedly pulled the trigger on a weapon... killing Boris outside his home on Indiana Avenue in the Shenandoah Heights sub - division. Kozak is facing a long list of charges.
Governor Tom Corbett sees added PA lottery revenue as important as ever in 2014. WHLM's B.J. Small telling us from our Harrisburg News Bureau... The Governor may have allowed the bid by the Camelot Global Services to manage the state lottery to expire, but his determination to raise the revenue is unwavering. He cites how the costs of services have outstretched the funding stream. The Governor hasn't ruled out keno and says additional lottery revenue could help what he is calling a tough budget period ahead.
A Commonwealth Court judge has permanently blocked the states Voter ID law. WHLM's Cathy Clark is reporting the judge's ruling was two fold- it says the Voter ID law placed an unreasonable burden on the fundamental right to vote and it criticizes the state's effort to implement the law. Attorneys for the plaintiffs saw if the law took effect, hundreds of thousands of voters would not have valid ID. A statement from the general counsel to the governor says they continue to evaluate the opinion.
Postal / Staples
Pennsylvania is one of four states in which the U-S Postal Service is opening retail centers in Staples stores. The move is being met by protests and threats from the Postal Service workers union... since the centers are staffed by Staples employees and not post office staffers. The dispute comes as the financially struggling Postal Service continues to form partnerships with private companies, and looks to cut costs and boost revenues.
Wilkes – Barre Robbery
Wilkes – Barre police are searching for a armed robber who knocked off the Hazle Mini Mart at the start of the weekend. The clerk telling police the man had a pistol... and escaped on foot... getting away with an undetermined amount of cash. No one was hurt in the Friday night stick up.
Drive By Shooting
A Wilkes – Barre man has been arrested after allegedly firing a weapon at an Ashley home. 36 – year old Edwin Cortez was arrested at the start of the weekend in connection with a drive – by shooting on North Main Street. Cortez says he didn't do it. Despite his plea.... Cortez is locked up in the Luzerne County Prison.
The Bloomsburg University wrestling team beat Hofstra 24-21 yesterday afternoon at Nelson Field House. The win evened the Huskies record to 5 and 5. Their next match will be Saturday night at Edinboro.
Bloomsburg University running back Franklyn Quiteh scored on a 20 yard touchdown run, and defensive end Larry Webster recorded a sack in nationally televised all star games on Saturday. Quiteh and Husky teammate Brian Clarke played in the NFLPA Collegiate Bowl in Los Angeles, and Webster was joined by teammate Matt Feiler in the East West Shrine game in St. Petersburg, Florida.
It was a sweep for Bloomsburg University basketball on Saturday as both the men's and women's teams won at West Chester. The Huskies will be at home this Wednesday taking on Mansfield.
HS Boys Basketball
In high school boys basketball Monday night it was a big game in the Heartland Conference Division I as Shamokin played at Danville. The Ironmen defended their status as Division champions by taking down Shamokin, previously unbeaten in the conference, 64-58. You can hear the details in the WHLM High School Hoops Report:
In high school ball on Thursday night, Hughesville plays at Central Columbia. Coverage on the WHLM stations starts after the 7 PM news.
The Superbowl will be the Denver Broncos against the Seattle Seahawks. On Sunday, in the AFC final, it was Denver 26 and New England 16. In the NFC final, it was Seattle 23 San Francisco 17. The Super Bowl will be played on February 2nd at New Jersey's MetLife Stadium
