Suspected Meth House Bust
At least three people were arrested Monday and a suspected Bloomsburg meth house was shut down by authorities. The home at 225 East 6th Street was first visited by probation officers... who noticed the making for a meth lab.... although one was not in operation. Neighbors watched throughout the day all the police activity. The two men and a woman arrested were snared on parole violations. All are lodged in the Columbia County Prison as police continue their investigation.
The membership of the Bloomsburg Fair Association... over the weekend... re-elected Paul Reichart as their President. He was challenged by former President Todd Lehman... but when the votes were counted Reichart won by 34 votes out of the 778 cast. The vote came only days after two board members took issue with Reichart's leadership. Meantime... Lehman says he may seek the association's top job when it opens in three years.
If you took a drive over the weekend up and down some of Bloomsburg's streets... folks are finally taking down their Christmas trees for pick – up by town crews. Each Monday through the end of the month... crews will be picking up discarded trees to be turned into mulch. Recycling center director Charles Fritz says the trees need to be stripped of bulbs and tinsel. The mulch will be given away this spring from the recycling center's compost site on Sands Avenue.
Farm Show Attendance
Icy temperatures were largely blamed for a dip in attendance at this year's Pennsylvania Farm Show, which closed Saturday. Show spokesperson Nicole Bucher says overall attendance at the 98th annual show was about 17 % lower than the record 585,000 estimated to have attended last year's exposition.
Bucher speculated that this week's unusually harsh cold spell likely discouraged many prospective visitors.
Penn State has a new head football coach. It's James Franklin who comes to state college after coaching Vanderbilt the past couple of years. During a new conference over the weekend... Franklin has a specific goal in his new job... such as bringing cohesiveness to the group. Franklin replaces Bill O'Brien who took a head coaching job with the NFL Houston Texans earlier this month.
The Borough of Danville is becoming pro – active... and is now publishing a quarterly newsletter to keep folks informed. Borough administrator Dan Knorr says... although there hasn't been any breakdown of communication in the past... council feels it wants to stay ahead of the curve. But where can you see or get a copy of the latest newsletter.... simply go to Borough Hall on Mill Street... or on – line at the Borough's website. Knorr says the newsletter is designed to keep borough residents up to speed of the priority's of council during the coming year.
Investigators spent Sunday night at the scene of a fatal crash in Williamsport... involving a police cruiser. State Police at Montoursville say the cruiser and another vehicle collided at East Third and Railway Streets.... the car slamming into a utility poll then went into a building where it caught fire. he building also went up in flames. They say the driver... 42 – year old James Robinson... was pronounced dead at the scene. The police officer was taken to the hospital where he was treated for minor injuries.
Hazleton City Council
Hazleton City Council plans a work session Tuesday night. At the top of the agenda.... taking another look at the newly adopted $8.9 – million 2014 budget. Cuts were made when the budget was formulated.... but other cuts may be offered in different areas to close a lingering budget gap.
Wilkes – Barre Fire
A Wilkes – Barre family escaped their burning home over the weekend when a fire broke out late Saturday afternoon. firemen rushing to South Fulton Street... and finding the blaze had broken out in a children's bedroom. The two story structure suffered moderate fire, smoke and water damage. Investigators say there's no reason to believe the blaze is suspicious.
