Interstate 80 Eastbound has reopened following a multiple truck crash at Mile 220 in Montour County early Friday morning. The highway had been closed from the Limestoneville to the Danville Exit. PennDOT reminds motorists they can log on to 511pa.com or call 511 from any phone to check interstate traffic conditions before heading out.
The rough weather we've had this week has led to school closings and two hour delays up and down the Susquehanna Valley. That was the case Friday morning when there was a plethora of 2 - hour delays. For Bloomsburg School Superintendent Cos Curry... sometimes it's a no – brainer when there's snow on the ground... but other times... its a gut wrenching decision. It leads to sleepless nights... and getting up early to make the all important decision.
Farm Show Attendance
Mother Nature has taken a bite out of turnout at the 98th Pennsylvania Farm Show. Icy conditions on opening weekend January fourth and then severe cold on Tuesday, has cut down the expected half-million visitors to the Farm Show Complex. Nicole Bucher of the state Department of Agriculture, describes attendance so far as "strong," but down twenty-three percent when put up against last year's record numbers. Bucher said the show was also a bit earlier on the calendar this year, which could have had an affect.
If you live in Danville... you soon may get something extra in your mail... or at the next governmental meeting you attend. The Borough government is now producing a quarterly newsletter... the latest edition which is now out. Danville's administrator Dan Knorr says the Borough is always looking for a better way to reach people. The newsletter features a mix of community activities... departmental updates... and Borough Council priorities.
As a freight train carrying crude oil and propane continues to burn in a sparsely populated area of Canada, just north of the Maine border, questions are being raised again about the safety of moving oil by rail. The incident in New Brunswick is the latest derailment involving a freight train carrying crude oil. There was another in North Dakota less than two weeks ago and a deadly derailment in Quebec in July. State Representative Joe Hackett of Delaware County is calling for a state house hearing involving the rail industry in March as rail shipments of crude oil increase in southeastern PA.
A Wyoming Valley West English teachers has been arrested for a second time... charged with having sex with a student. Lauren Harrington - Cooper of Kingston was arraigned on a host of charges. Harrington - Cooper allegedly sent sexually explicit messages to a student last fall... which allegedly led to the pair having encounters in a car. She is suspended from the job without pay.
The state's largest teacher's union has issued its "Solutions that Work" report, expanding on strategies first outlined three years ago to improve student performance. Mike Crossey, President of the Pennsylvania State Education Association, agrees that it "takes a village" to educate a child and says that's addressed in the report. Many of the recommendations are tied to funding but the report also calls for charter school reform and efforts to encourage more parental, family and community involvement in education.
Hazleton police are looking for a man after he allegedly pistol whipped and robbed another Wednesday night. Moises Pichardo allegedly used a pistol to beat a man in the face... then robbed him. The incident taking place at First and Garfield Streets. Pichardo faces a long list of charges
Route 309 Accident
A Tamaqua woman is hospitalized after being critically injured in a two vehicle crash on Route 309 in Kline Township Thursday morning. Police say 37 - year old Grace DiMarco was northbound on 309... when she lost control... crossing over into the opposite lane... and collided with an SUV driven by 52 - year old Thomas Deliman of Drums. DiMarco was flown to the Lehigh Valley Hospital in Allentown.
In 1993 in Danny Hale's first season as Bloomsburg University's head football coach, his Huskies lost to an East Stroudsburg team that was led by quarterback James Franklin. As early as today, Franklin is expected to be named the new head coach at Penn State. Franklin built his coaching reputation at Vanderbilt which he led to three bowl games in the past three seasons.

In boys' high school basketball Thursday night Southern Columbia defeated Mt. Carmel 62 - 44... and Benton defeated Columbia Montour Vo Tech 48 - 29.
In boys basketball Friday night, Central Columbia beat Southern Columbia 51-44. You can hear the details with Jim Doyle in the WHLM High School Hoops Report:

In girls basketball Thursday night... It was Danville over Bloomsburg 55 - 32... and Southern Columbia defeated Benton 58 - 30.
BU Women's Basketball
In women's college basketball Saturday afternoon, Bloomsburg University will play Philadelphia University at the Nelson Field House. The game begins at 1 O'clock. Coverage on the WHLM Stations begins with the pregame show at 12:40.
In men's college basketball last night, Arizona, the number one ranked team in the nation, played at UCLA.... with Arizona getting the victory 79 - 75.
