Central Columbia

Remember Tuesday morning.... area school districts in Columbia and Montour Counties were closed for the day due to the sub – zero weather. The only district to remain open was Central Columbia on Old Berwick Road. Superintendent Harry Mathias took a lot of heat for his decision. He told our media partner Newswatch 16... his reasoning to keep the district open was based on information from the National Weather Service. And even though the air temperature was at least two below... the NWS said students waiting for the bus should be okay for up to 30 minutes.

 

Danville Fire

Danville firemen fought cold weather to put out a fire Tuesday morning in the 100 block of Ash Street. Crews found flames shooting from the structure and called for help from departments outside of Danville. They not only faced the flames, but the ice which formed from the water. No one was at home when the fire broke out.

 

Shenandoah Fire

A state police fire marshal is expected to be in Shenandoah Wednesday to try and determine what started a blaze in a double – block home. The fire was discovered in a home in the 200 block of South Ferguson Street Tuesday morning. Firefighters battled the flames in sub – zero temperatures. Their biggest problem... water turning to ice... making the fire grounds slippery. Luckily... no one was hurt fighting that blaze in Shenandoah.

 

Route 11 Accident

A two car crash in the vicinity of Bloomsburg Carpet temporarily shut down Route 11 Tuesday morning. The accident happened around 11:25 Tuesday morning. Reports from the scene indicate that two people were injured. One man was trapped inside his car, but was extracated. Both drivers were transported to a local hospital by ambulance.

 

Cold Weather

We've talked about it since late last week... now it's become a reality... the coldest weather of the winter has settled in. It was minus 2 degrees on the Square in Bloomsburg Tuesday morning. Greg DeVoir of the National Weather Service in State College says the chill will stay with us through at least Wednesday... then there will be a warm up. Meantime... the National Weather Service has issued a wind chill advisory through early Tuesday evening.

 

Precautions

If you have to stay outside for an extended period... frostbite could play into the equation... so says emergency room physician Dr. Armando Marquez. Another risk with exposure to freezing temperatures is hypothermia. That's when the core body temperature drops... leading to confusion, unconsciousness and even death.

 

Blues Festival

Taking a tour of four local breweries... and listening to some blues music is a way to chase away the winter doldrums. The event takes place February 7th at the Berwick Brewery... Marley's in Bloomsburg... Turkey Hill Brewery near Lightstreet and the Old Forge Brewery in Danville.... so says Downtown Bloomsburg, Incorporated manager Adrienne Mael. Ms. Mael says the event is designed to pump some winter tourist dollars into the local economy... during an unusually slow time of the year. Call the Columbia - Montour Chamber of Commerce for ticket information.

 

Medical Helicopter

There will soon be a new tenant at the Hazleton Regional Airport. That merger between Hazleton General and Lehigh Valley Hospital in Allentown will find Lehigh Valley's helicopters based at the airport. It's all part of a deal between Hazleton City Council and the hospital. Lehigh runs a trauma center... and having a helicopter based in Hazleton means quicker transport for critically ill patients.

 

Gal Fight

A Plains Township woman... near Wilkes – Barre... has been released on bond after she allegedly stabbed her gal pal in the hand with a pair of successors...... and slicing off a tip of her thumb. 22 – year old Tenisun Kronmiller is facing a long list of charges afteallegedlyly struggling with Brittany Cabrera. Police say Kronmiller was arrested under a domestic violence law. Cabrera was treated at a hospital and released.

 

Bank Robbery

Authorities in the Central Susquehanna Valley are looking for a man who robbed a bank in Shamokin Dam on Monday. The robbery went down at the Mifflinburg Bank and Trust on the North Susquehanna Trail. The bandit was wearing a mask to pull the stick up. If you have information about the robbery... call Snyder County authorities.
