Interstate 80 Reopens
Traffic is flowing smoothly Monday morning between the Buckhorn and Lightstreet interchanges on Interstate 80. The superhighway was shuttered for nearly twelve hours following a collision Sunday afternoon between an SUV and a gasoline tanker hauling an estimated 8,500 gallons of product. The tanker rolled over several times... springing a leak... forcing the shutdown. The gasoline was off - loaded to a second tanker overnight. The westbound lane was opened around 2 O'clock Monday morning... with the eastbound lane opened two hours later.
PA Farm Show
More than a half million people are expected to come through the doors of the 98th Pennsylvania Farm Show this week in Harrisburg. For Boots Hetherington of neighboring Schuylkill County... it's a chance or farmers to strut their stuff. The 98th Farm Show runs through Saturday...
As Governor Tom Corbett heads into a re-election battle this fall.... he doesn't put too much stock in a recent Quinnipiac University poll showing him vulnerable in November. But during an interview at the Farm Show over the weekend with WHLM News... Governor Corbett talked about the accomplishments of his administration... such as not raising taxes and cutting spending where necessary. Right now.... there are at least eight announced candidates seeking the Democratic nomination during the spring primary.
PSU Interim Coach
Penn State has announced the appointment of an interim head football coach. Larry Johnson is no stranger to Penn State Football. He has served the last 18 seasons as the Nittany Lions' Defensive Line Coach. Johnson says his biggest priorities now focus on the players and the program. Even so, Johnson has announced that he will apply for the position full time, as the search gets underway for a successor to Bill O'Brien, who left Penn State to become Head Coach of the Houston Texans.
Meantime.... the search goes on for a new head football coach at Penn State University. Over the weekend... there was word that the school was considering offering a contract to University of Miami coach Al Golden. But on Sunday.... Golden issuing a statement saying thanks... but no thanks... he plans to stay in south Florida.
With holiday travel wrapping up, the winter travel season arrives... and there are deals to be found: Major tourist destinations and theme parks usually see their bookings drop after the holidays so Jeanenne Tornatore of Orbitz.com says January and February are good times for a get away. She says just avoid the two long holiday weekends... Martin Luther King Junior and Presidents Days... when flights tend to fill up. She adds you can also find mid-week deals in Vegas in January and February.
A new Geisinger Careworks walk in clinic in Hazleton has opened it's doors. The latest clinic is in the Staples Plaza which opened at the start of the weekend. The clinic is designed to keep people from clogging up the emergency rooms of area hospitals. A second Careworks clinic is scheduled to open later this month in Nanticoke.
Wilkes - Barre Robbery
Police in Wilkes – Barre are looking for a lone armed robber who knocked off a Deli at the corner of Park Avenue and Lehigh Street over the weekend. They say a man... just over six feet tall... came into the story carrying a handgun. He got cash and left the store on foot. No one was hurt.
If you travel any portion of the Pennsylvania Turnpike... including the Northeast Extension... you'll be paying higher tolls. Rates went up anywhere from 20 cents to a $1.10 depending on the destination. EZ pass users see an increase from 2 to 15 cents. Money from the rate increase go to funding obligations under Act 44... as well as capitol improvements.
Former Bloomsburg University All American Jahri Evans has been named to the Pro Bowl for the 5th time in his career, but the New Orleans Saints right guard is hoping to play in the Super Bowl rather than the Pro Bowl. On Saturday night, the Saints beat the Philadelphia Eagles in an NFL wild card playoff game. This Saturday they will play the Seahawks in Seattle.
In the NFL playoffs yesterday... the San Diego Chargers defeated the Cincinnati Bengals 27-10... and the San Francisco 49ers getting by the Green Bay Packers 23-20.
College football's national championship will be decided tonight at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena where Florida State will play Auburn.
Two milestones were reached in local high school basketball on Saturday. Central Columbia coach Chris Snyder won his 100th career game as his Bluejays defeated Bloomsburg 36-22. In girls basketball Madi Bower went over 1000 points for her career in leading Millville to a 60-27 win over Sullivan County.
