Operation Stormwatch

The Berwick girls basketball game against Pittston area has been postponed until Friday night at the Berwick High School.


The Veterans Memorial Meeting at the Bloomsburg Town Council tonight has been cancelled.


LCCC will be closed today after 4:00 PM.


Tonight's Weight Watchers meeting at Bloomsburg Christian Church has been cancelled.


And tonight's bingo at the Espy Fire Hall is canceled.


Shots Fired in Bloomsburg

Bloomsburg Police are working on a case of shots fired New Year's Day in front of the Moose Exchange in the 200 block of West Main Street. A news release says that officers were called there at midnight... but came up empty handed. A couple of hours later... Philadelphia police called... saying a hospital was treating a gunshot wound victim... who said he was shot in Bloomsburg in front of the Moose Exchange.

The wound is considered minor. If you have information about the shots fired... call Bloomsburg PD.


Winter Weather

We could be in for a day's worth of rough weather starting Thursday afternoon. The National Weather Service in State College has issued a winter weather advisory for snow for the Susquehanna Valley from noon Thursday to 7 AM Friday. Forecasters say we could get anywhere from 3 to 6 inches of accumulation... with the most intense snowfall taking place Thursday afternoon into the evening hours. Hazardous travel is a byproduct... with winds out of the northeast at 10 to 15 MPH... gusting to 25 MPH. To make matters worse... temps will be falling into the single digits producing wind chill factors of zero or below.


O'Brien / Houston

Penn State University is expected to launch a search soon for a replacement for head football coach Bill O'Brien. He's apparently agreed to become head coach of the NFL's Houston Texans... as first reported earlier this week by ESPN. The formal announcement is expected Thursday. Houston is expected to pay Penn State nearly $7 - million to buy out O'Brien contract which has 3 - and - a - half years to run.


Counselors at Southern

When Southern Columbia students return to the classroom today... they'll be greeted by grief counselors on hand following the death of 17 – year old Miranda Rose... a junior at the school. She was aboard a Piper Twin Comanche which crashed the day after Christmas in a field in Adams County... near Gettysburg. The high – performance plane took off from the Bloomsburg Municipal Airport and was on it's way to the Carolina's when people on the ground reported hearing a plane with engine trouble. Also believed killed in the crash was the pilot... 46 – year old Michael Bronzburg of Catawissa. And although formal ID's have not been released by authorities... the pair's preliminary obituaries have been posted in local publications.


State Lottery

Senate Democrats are calling for more transparency after the Corbett administration bailed on a bid to allow a British company to manage the state lottery. Meantime, Senate Democrats are planning for the next phase of lottery system management, now that it won't be outsourced to a company overseas. Governor Tom Corbett decided to allow a bid by Camelot Global Services to expire this week. In hailing the decision, Senate Democratic leader Jay Costa of Allegheny County, called for more legislative oversight and transparency going forward. The Camelot bid had been extended numerous times and fees paid by the state exceeded $4.5 million.

Millard / Vet Rep

If you're a veteran... you might want to circle January 7th on your calendar.... so says State Representative David Millard. That's when a veterans representative will be at his office in the Market Street Plaza to take care of problems facing vets starting at 10 AM Tuesday morning.


Phillips Funeral services

Saying good-bye to a long time state lawmaker. Funeral services will be held Saturday for former State Representative Merle Phillips. He died Monday at the age of 85. Those services taking place at the Emmanuel Bible Fellowship Church in Sunbury. A viewing will take place Friday at the church starting at 5 O'clock... and then Saturday starting at noon. Phillips served Northumberland County from the early 80's through 2010.


YMCA Walk / Run

An estimated 500 runners braved temperatures in the mid 20's to take part in the Bloomsburg YMCA's 5K run / walk Tuesday night. The event taking runners north on Market Street to Main.... down East to 5th Street... back out to Market... south to Ft. McClure Boulevard... north on Market... back to the finish line at the YMCA. The winner in just over 19 minutes was Michael Hause of Kulpmont the defending race winner. Hause is a member of the Misericordia University track team... and is the fourth time he's competed in the YMCA event.


Luzerne County

Nearly two dozen Luzerne County workers are no longer employed. The County Commission says 22 workers were given their pink slips Tuesday. It's all part of the county's way to balance their 2014 budget. Also... a new insurance company takes over health coverage Wednesday in a move to cut costs. And if you own property in Luzerne County... you tax bill will go up an estimated eight percent.


Warrant Issued

A warrant has been issued for a Wilkes – Barre woman... wanted on assault charges. Police say Lauren Rushton attacked a man early New Year's morning on North Main Street in Ashley. The victim was rushed to a hospital... reported now in serious condition... but is expected to recover. Police aren't saying what sparked the incident.


Ashland Fire

Investigators are probing the origin of a fire which damaged an Ashland home on New Year's Day. Police were called to Walnut Street early Wednesday morning for a domestic dispute. When they arrived... they saw smoke pouring out of the structure. They say they found two fires blazing. Everyone got out of the building safely.


I-81 Fatal

A Ringtown man is dead after being tossed from his car on Interstate 81... near the Mahanoy City exit at the start of the New Year's Holiday. Authorities say 53 – year old Ralph Rumbel of Ringtown lost control of his car... hit an embankment and flipped over. Rumbel was ejected from the car and died at the scene.

Bowl Games

Wednesday was a busy day for college football bowl games. In the Gator Bowl, Nebraska got by Georgia 24-19... in the Capital One Bowl in Orlando, it was South Carolina over Wisconsin 34-24. In the Outback Bowl, LSU got by Iowa 21-14... and in the Rose Bowl Michigan State beat Stanford 24-20. Wednesday night in the Fiesta bowl, it was Central Florida over Baylor 52 to 42. Thursday night in the Sugar Bowl in New Orleans, Alabama takes on Oklahoma
