Winter Weather Advisory
We could be in for a day's worth of rough weather. The National Weather Service in State College has issued a winter weather advisory for snow for the Susquehanna Valley from noon Thursday to 7 AM Friday. Forecasters say we could get anywhere from 3 to 6 inches of accumulation... with the most intense snowfall taking place Thursday afternoon into the evening hours. Hazardous travel is a byproduct... with winds out of the northeast at 10 to 15 MPH... gusting to 25 MPH. To make matters worse... temps will be falling into the single digits producing wind chill factors of zero or below.
O'Brien May be headed for Houston
ESPN is reporting the Houston Texans have ended their coaching search early, as the team has agreed to hire Penn State head coach Bill O'Brien to helm the franchise. The Texans sported the worst record in the NFL in 2013. O'Brien follows Dom Capers and Gary Kubiak as just the third head coach in the franchise's history, the first to be hired from the collegiate ranks. In two years at Penn State, under the restrictions of NCAA sanctions, O'Brien posted a 15-9 record, with a 10-6 mark in conference play. In 2012, his Nittany Lions went 8-4, giving him the most wins ever by a first-year head coach at Penn State. O'Brien was an assistant coach with the Patriots from 2007 to '11, helping to lead them to a Super Bowl as an offensive coordinator in his final season.
New Year's Eve Walk / Run
An estimated 500 runners braved temperatures in the mid 20's to take part in the Bloomsburg YMCA's 5K run / walk Tuesday night. The event taking runners north on Market Street to Main.... down East to 5th Street... back out to Market... south to Ft. McClure Boulevard... north on Market... back to the finish line at the YMCA. The winner in just over 19 minutes was Michael Hause of Kulpmont the defending race winner. Hause is a member of the Misericordia University track team... and is the fourth time he's competed in the YMCA event.
Luzerne County Cuts
Nearly two dozen Luzerne County workers are no longer employed. The County Commission says 22 workers were given their pink slips Tuesday. It's all part of the county's way to balance their 2014 budget. Also... a new insurance company takes over health coverage Wednesday in a move to cut costs. And if you own property in Luzerne County... you tax bill will go up an estimated eight percent.
