Millard / Gas Tax
With the passage earlier this year of the $3.2 - billion dollar transportation bill.... there will be some restructuring of the gas tax we pay at the pump starting the first of the year. Other changes we can look forward to will be increased fees for drivers licenses... and car registration.
The speed limit on Pennsylvania's interstate highways will go up to 70 miles per hour, but it won't happen soon or on every roadway. The new speed limit was included in the controversial $3.2 - billion billion dollar transportation funding bill signed into law last month. PennDOT Secretary Barry Schoch, says analysis is needed to determine where the speed limit will go up. No word if sections of Interstate 80 in Columbia and Montour County's will be raised from it's current 65 to 70 MPH.
Former Chief Buried
Private funeral services were held over the weekend for former Bloomsburg Police Chief Larry Smith. The former chief died while shoveling snow at his Montour Township home last Thursday. Smith was laid to rest at the Rosemont Cemetery on Old Berwick Road near Espy.
Chief Kopitsky Retires
Catawissa Police Chief Tony Kopitsky rides off into the sunset as he retires at the end of the year. He's been Catawissa's top cop for the past five years... and at one time he patrolled the street as a Bloomsburg officer. During a recent exit interview... Chief Kopitsky says some shifts were pretty tough... but he always got the information he needed by citizens of the Borough. Chief Kopitsky doesn't plan anything special after the first of the year.. instead he'll settle into a routine. Starting January 1st... the department will be led by Josh Laidacker.
Six people are without a home after a fire swept through a double – block structure in Minersville on Sunday. Two people lived on one side of the home... while four lived on the other. No word what sparked Sunday's blaze... but it did begin on the ground floor.
Word from the Scranton Diocese says the Reverend J. Duane Gavitt of St. Ann's Roman Catholic Church in Freeland will soon be moved to Our Lady of Fatima Church in Wilkes – Barre. Reverend Gavitt has been pastor at the Freeland church since 2009. Meantime... the diocese has appointed the Reverend Michael Kloton as administrator of the Freeland church.
Those seeking college aid for the academic year which begins next September can start the process beginning in January. Students and their parents must first determine what types of aid they're eligible for, by filling out the Free Application for Federal Student Aid. It's available through the Pennsylvania Higher Education Assistance Agency website.
The Danville High School boys basketball team defeated Southern Columbia on Monday night. The final score was 72-51. The National Football League regular season came to an end Sunday. In a game Sunday night that decided the NFC East title as well as a playoff spot... the Philadelphia Eagles defeated the Dallas Cowboys 34 - 22. In the afternoon, the Steelers downed the Cleveland Browns 20-7, but were eliminated from the playoffs when San Diego beat Kansas City 27-24 in overtime.

It was the New York Jets over the Miami Dolphins 20-7.... and the New York Giants defeated the Washington Redskins 20-6.
