The start of Sunday afternoon's snow storm had first responders busy... thanks to icy streets. Bloomsburg Fire Police were called to Iron and Glen Avenue when the road became slippery, hanging up drivers who attempted to drive up the hill. Other problems were found on Second Street on the campus of Bloomsburg University. The slippery conditions also produced an accident on Fifth Street Hollow Road when a minivan went over the embankment. The roads remained problematic until public works crews got out... placing anti – skid and salt on the roadways. Meantime... PPL Electric Utilities employees are prepared for the overnight storm in order to respond to customers who may loose their juice. The utilities Terry McBride says PPL takes every storm seriously... to plan ahead in case the power goes out. The National Weather Service in State College has posted a Winter Weather Advisory for the region and is in effect until 10 O'clock Monday morning.
Berwick firemen made quick work of what could have been a disastrous blaze in the 1100 hundred block of 5th Avenue Sunday afternoon. Fire Chief Bill Coolbaugh says they alarm sounded around 12-45... with arriving firemen finding a problem with a wood burning stove. Chief Coolbaugh confirmed that a ceramic ring which goes from the stove to the chimney apparently cracked allowing flames to eat into the wall.... spreading the fire through a ceiling heading into the main part of the structure. Crews had the situation under control within minutes... and were on the scene for about an hour.
