Attempted Bloomsburg Robbery
Bloomsburg Police are looking for a suspect wanted in connection the overnight armed stick up in the parking lot of the corner of East Main Street and Lightstreet Road. A news release says the person they're looking for is a white man... five feet, nine inches tall... of average build and dirty blond hair. He was dressed in black... with a black garbage bag hiding his identity... and threatened the victim with a utility razor knife. If you have information about the incident... call Bloomsburg Police.
Some folks in Connecticuit may be getting their UPS pacakges a little late. The tractor – trailer they were in caught fire late Thursday night in the rest area of I-80... east of Mifflinville. Fire Chief Dave Mausteller says when they arrived... the cab of the 18 – wheeler was involved in flames... and the fire was creeping towards the 53 foot trailer. Mifflinville firemen getting help from Lime Ridge and Espy. Mausteller telling us UPS took the trailer to a Wyoming Valley distribution center in order to forward the packages to their destination.
Bloomsburg / Late Shopping
With one less week for Christmas shopping this year... the Downtown Bloomsburg, Incorporated is promoting late night shopping Friday. DBI manager Adrienne Mael says it's a great way to draw shoppers to the downtown area. It's also a way to support the downtown is by buying local..
Trying to keep the dream alive of her late grandfather.... now it's up to Renee DiAugustine – Bower and her family to keep the Berwick Theatre open... rather than go dark as they try and raise the $70 – thousand dollars needed for digital projection equipment. That was the goal of her grandfather Vince DiAugustine before he passed away earlier this year... and is going the social media route to do just that. Ms. DiAugustine – Bower says there is no drop dead date to switch to digital projection... but the sooner the better... since 35 – millimeter prints of motion pictures will not be available from film distributors.
Hanover Township Police and the Luzerne County Drug Task Force have arrested a half dozen people on various drug charges. The first arrest took place on Sunday on Boland Avenue... and wrapped up late this week with the arrests of others. All are in the Luzerne County Jail awaiting bail money.
Home Invader Sentenced
A Luzerne County man... convicted of a home invasion could spend anywhere between 7 to 9 years in prison. In Luzerne County Court on Thursday Matthew Graziano was sentenced for his part in the September 2012 home invasion in Ashley. Graziano is no stranger to law enforcement... having had encounters with officers since the late '90's.
NEPA Unemployment Rate
The State Department of Labor and Industry says the jobless rate across Northeastern Pennsylvania remained unchanged at 9.2 % in October. It's the third consecutive month the rate has remained the same. The latest numbers give Luzerne, Lackawanna and Wyoming County's the distinction of having the highest unemployment rate in the state.
The City of Hazleton is looking for Council's approval for a request to seek $2.7 - million in state gaming funds to spiff up some recreational areas. Specifically... the city want to upgrade the Hazleton Little League complex... and renovate two buildings in the downtown area... putting them back on the tax rolls.
Transportation Secretary Barry Schoch says that opposition to a new law that raises billions of dollars in higher fees and taxes to fund transportation needs has not surprised him. Schoch has been countered by support from those who believe passage of the legislation was the right thing to do. Lawmakers passed the major transportation bill two weeks ago to fix roads, rebuild bridges and help the state’s mass transit systems. The new law will be phased in over five years and will raise gasoline taxes at the wholesale level plus levy a range of motorist fees to eventually generate more than $2.3 billion annually.
Berwick HS Football
The last time a Berwick High School football team was in the state finals was 1997. Fridaynight, the Bulldogs face an Archbishop Wood team that has been in the finals in each of the past two seasons, winning it all in 2011. The Class AAA state semifinal will be played at J. Birney Crum Stadium in Allentown starting at 5 O'clock Saturday afternoon. Coverage on Classic Rock 103.5 begins at 4 with The Coach Curry Show. The other semifinal between Bishop McDevitt and Erie Cathedral Prep will be played tonight in Clearfield.
High School Basketball
The boys high school basketball regular season tips off Friday night. Among the games on this evening's schedule, Danville is at Pottsville; Central Columbia is at Shikellamy; and Columbia Motour Vo Tech is at Benton.
The Bloomsburg University men's and women's basketball teams play at Shippensburg Saturday afternoon starting with the women's game at 1 O'clock. Coverage on the WHLM Stations begins with the pregame show at 12:40.
In college football Thursday night... the Lousiville Cardnials defeated the Cincinnati Bearcats 31 to 24...
In the NFL... the Jacksonville Jaguars downed the Houston Texans 27 to 20.
