Free Parking

If you notice the bags on top of the parking meters along Main Street in Bloomsburg... it's not just for decoration... but rather signals the start of free parking during the holiday season. Downtown Bloomsburg, Incorporated's Adrienne Mael telling us that DBI and the Bloomsburg Town Council is collaborating free parking during the holiday season. The promotion lasts through December 31st... and is good for two hours at a clip... otherwise you will be ticketed for taking up a space. Free parking will be expanded to the permit – only area on December 16th.

 

Susquehanna Thruway

The wraps were taken off recently for a $558 – million highway project... making the trip from Central Pennsylvania to Harrisburg a lot easier. PennDOT District Three engineer Sandy Tosca says we're about a year and a half away from letting the first contract for a bridge. That bridge would span the West Branch of the Susquehanna River. The Susquehanna Valley Central Thruway would send traffic from the Winfield area... north of Shamokin Dam and Selinsgrove... connecting with Routes 11 and 15 near the Susquehanna Valley Mall.

 

Reward Grows

Although there is no suspect in the case... the reward continues to grow in the case of the murder of a 97 – year old Nanticoke woman on Thanksgiving day. Business owners and residents have pitched in 3-thousand dollars into a reward fund in the death of Gertrude Price of East Grand Street.

 

Cyber Monday
It may have been tagged Cyber Monday, but shopping online got as early a jump start, as did Black Friday. Cyber Monday was created in 2005 to encourage online commerce the Monday after the traditional shopping season kicks off on Black Friday, the day after Thanksgiving. This year, the buying period is compacted by only 26 shopping days in the period before Christmas. Just like with Black Friday Cyber Monday shopping started as early as Thanksgiving. Mobile applications are allowing shoppers to do product research and compare prices while in the stores where they might make a purchase.

 

Representative Mundy

State Representative Phyllis Mundy of neighboring Luzerne County says she will not seek another term. First elected in 1990... and has served the 120th district as a Democrat. Her district includes the west side of the Susquehanna River from Kingston to West Pittston... and part of the back mountain area.

 

Hospital Strike

Nurses at Wilkes – Barre General Hospital will be striking Tuesday over the lack of a contract since April. It's a one – day work disorder to show their displeasure with management. But hospital officials say the hospital's daily routine won't be interrupted... hiring temporary nurses and rearranging other staffers to fill in the void.

 

Weekend Crashes

The numbers are out dealing with highway crashes investigated by Pennsylvania State Police over the Thanksgiving holiday weekend. Police investigating 936 crashes... in which 9 people died and another 236 were injured. Of those... 74 of the mishaps were alcohol related... with one death reported. A year ago... 13 people died on the state's highways... injuring 11 – hundred others

 

Property Tax / Rent Rebate Assistance

State Senator John Gordner of Berwick says that PA Property Tax and Rent Rebate Assistance is available at his many offices throughout the district. Person 65 and older... widows or widowers over 50... and those permanently disabled are eligible for the rebates. Questions... just call Senator Gordner's offices in Bloomsburg, Millersburg, Mt. Carmel and Shamokin Dam for more information.

Sports Illustrated

Sports Illustrated is the latest publication to recognize the talents of Bloomsburg University's senior running back Franklyn Quiteh. In the latest issue of the magazine, Quiteh is listed on the Faces in the Crowd page. Quiteh is one of nine finalists for the Harlon Hill Trophy that goes to the top Division II player in the nation. The voting ends this Saturday. The award will be presented on December 20th in Alabama.

 

Berwick High School

The Berwick high school football team will make the school's first appearance in a state semifinal since 2004 when the Bulldogs take on Archbishop Wood Friday night in Allentown. Archbishop Wood has been in the state finals the past two seasons. In 2011, the Vikings crushed Bishop McDevitt in the final. Last season they lost to Erie Cathedral Prep 24-14. Friday's game kicks off at 7 O'clock. Coverage on Classic Rock 103.5 starts at 6 with The Coach Curry Show.

 

BU Basketball

The Bloomsburg University men's and women's basketball teams both have 4 and 1 records going into Wednesday night's home games against Cheyney at the Nelson Field House. The doubleheader starts with the women's game at 5:30. Coverage on the whlm stations begins with the pregame show at 5:10.

 

Monday Night Football

In the NFL Monday night... the Seattle Seahawks defeated the New Orleans Saints 34 – 7.
