Deer Season

The 2013 deer season opens Monday morning. A good turnout of hunters is expected since the weather is forecast to be ideal. An estimated 750,000 hunters will be in the woods... now through December 14th. Last year... hunters harvested more than 340,000 deer. A PA Game Commission spokesman says the first day can be the best day... since more than half of the bucks brought down are taken the first Monday of the season.

 

Parade of Lights

The Christmas season has been ushered into Bloomsburg thanks to the WHLM Parade of Lights. It happened Friday night... with the Bloomsburg High School Band leading the way. Up to thirty lighted floats... as well as cars and trucks traveled the mile plus route of march.. bringing joy to thousands of people jammed curbside along the route of march. The parade also brought Santa Claus into town for the holiday season. He'll spend weekends at his cottage in front of the Bloomsburg Diner... greeting the folks who stop by.

 

BPD Firepower

The Bloomsburg Town Council has given the go – ahead to the police department to purchase some additional firepower. Seven patrol rifles will be purchased... as well as associated gear for $8,711. It's a good investment so says Chief Roger Van Loan. Also included with the purchase are several cruiser locking gun racks... Barricade entry tool kits... as well as ballistic shields.

 

Shale Jobs

The Multi – State Shale Research Collaborative is out with a report that shows shale drilling in Pennsylvania and five other states has produced far fewer jobs than the industry and it backers claim.

Frank Mauro of the Fiscal Policy Institute says the numbers aren't as true as they appear to be. Lycoming, Bradford, Tioga and Susquehanna County's are seeing the most jobs created due to on – going Marcellus Shale drilling operations.

 

Hazleton Layoffs

Those layoff of Hazleton City workers has been delayed at least a week. Mayor Joseph Yannuzzi had threatened the layoffs in order to close a half – million dollar budget gap. But since the threat first surfaced... it appears the city and financial institutions have come to a loan agreement... the administration has placed the layoffs on “hold.” The next time the issue is expected to surface is at city council meeting scheduled for Thursday.

 

Nanticoke Murder

Still no suspect in the death of a 97 – year old Nanticoke woman who died last Thursday at the hands of a home invader. Gertrude Price was found dead in her in her East Grand Street home by her family. Now... a group of Nanticoke area residents plan to offer a reward for the arrest and conviction of the killer.

 

Nanticoke Fire

Investigators that Friday night fire on West Field Street in Nanticoke was accidental in nature. The flames were discovered at 42 West Field... and spread quickly next door. The family of eight who lived there got out safely.

 

Hazleton Careworks

Geisinger Health System says it will cut the ribbon Monday... opening their next urgent care center. The Careworks clinic is near the Staples store in West Hazleton... and is designed to handle non – emergency cases... as to not to clog up local emergency rooms. The 1,600 square foot facility will be opened 7 days a week... and is staffed by health care professionals.

 

Penn State Security

Pennsylvania State University is installing more than 600 cameras in dormitories and dining commons on its main campus. Officials say the $1.4 million upgrade is meant to deter theft and vandalism and increase security. The university began installing the digital video cameras in 60 buildings on its State College campus at the end of October and plans to complete the project by May. Penn State already has cameras in dorms at eight of its campuses including the PSU campus in Hazleton.

 

WHLM Sports

BU Basketball

The Bloomsburg University women's basketball team played Goldy-Beacom yesterday afternoon at Nelson Field House. WHLM's Larry White says Bloomsburg came out on top with a score of 60 to 48.

Bloomsburg now goes to 4 and 1 on the season. The Huskies now play Cheney Wednesday... starting with the women's game at 5:30 and the men's contest at 7:30.

 

BU Wrestling

In the Grapple at the Garden Sunday at Madison Square Garden in New York City, the Bloomsburg University wrestling team split a pair of matches. The Huskies lost to 7th ranked Illinois 29-18 and then beat Penn 21-16. The Huskies will compete in the PSAC championships at Edinboro this Saturday.

 

HS Playoffs

The J. Birney Krum Stadium in Allentown will be the venue for the Class AAA state semifinal football game between Berwick and Archbishop Wood. Friday's game begins at 7 O'clock. Friday's other semifinal is Bishop McDevitt against Erie Cathedral Prep.

 

NFL

In the NFL Sunday, the Philadelphia Eagles beat the Arizona Cardinals 24-21... the New York Jets lost to the Miami Dolphins 23-3... and it was the New York Giants over the Washington Redskins

24 – 17.

 

NFL / Monday

There is a great NFL match up Monday night in Seattle. The Seahawks who are 10 and 1 play the New Orleans Saints who are 9 and 2.
