Run for the Diamonds

1,716 runners started the 104th Run for the Diamonds on Thursday in Berwick. They were challenged by the 9 – mile course up Foundryville Road towards the twin churches at Summerhill... through Kachinka Hollow... to Martzville Road returning on the finish line at 3rd and Market Streets. Paul Thistle crossed the line first... making the distance in 45-minutes, 46-seconds. The first woman to cross the finish line... and 27th overall... was Karaleigh Foster of Boalsburg... in Centre County. Now... organizers will assess this year's Run for the Diamonds... as they prepare for the 2014 version of the event.

 

Ted Stuban

One of the area's senior politicians passed away at the start of the Thanksgiving Holiday. Ted Stuban died at his home following a bout with cancer. He served on Berwick Borough Council... was the Mayor of Briar Creek... and served in the state house in Harrisburg for 16 years. And while in politics... he ran an auction house. A visitation is Friday night... with service are set for Saturday morning at the Mayo Funeral Home in Berwick.

 

Church Burglary

A 36 – year old Freeland man remains in the Columbia County Prison after he was allegedly caught burglarizing the First Presbyterian Church on Market Street this week. Police say Scott Navar was found hiding on a window sill by police early Wednesday morning. It's believed he also broke into the Wesley United Methodist church... at 3rd and Market making off with laptop computers and a monitor. Navar was arraigned. Bail was set at $100,000.

 

BTE

The Bloomsburg Theater Ensemble is kicking off the holiday season with their production of a “Very Merry Christmas Special” set in 1967 when televised holiday specials were at the top of the ratings. During an appearance this week on the WHLM Morning Buzz... the BTE's Richie Cannaday says all members of the ensemble contributed to the writing of the production. The first performance is Friday at 7:30... and then throughout the weekend. The shows will take place through December 28th at the Alvina Krause Theater in Bloomsburg.

 

Bombs Discovered

State police in neighboring Schuylkill County arrested a man and charged him with possessing weapons of mass destruction. 26 year old Tony Weiss of Auburn was found in possession of bombs during an eviction from his home in the 1600 block of Summer Hill Road in South Manheim Township. Weiss remains in the Schuylkill County Jail.

 

Gambling

Gambling opportunities may soon be coming to a restaurant, bar or tavern near you. Gov. Corbett signed into law the state’s first major gambling expansion since table games were legalized at its casinos in 2009. The new law allows bars and restaurants to offer pull tab games, daily drawings and raffles. The legislation takes effect in 60 days when permits and applications to get a gaming license become available.

 

Pension

A judge in neighboring Luzerne County is weighing arguments about whether former Clerk of Courts Robert Reilly may keep his county pension in the wake of his 2010 corruption plea. Reilly was sentenced in November 2010 to serve two years of probation. He was convicted of lying to FBI agents who questioned him about money he received from a county contractor.

 

Wilkes – Barre Fire

Three Wilkes – Barre resident were displaced from their homes Thanksgiving morning. Authorities say the blaze at 72 Howard Street was discovered around 4 O'clock in the morning. Most of the units were vacant... but three people lived in the building. They were helped by the American Red Cross. Cause of the early morning fire remains under investigation.

 

Hearing Continued

The preliminary hearing for a man in a brutal sexual attack this month... has bee continued. 30 – year old Emmanuel Paulino is facing numerous sex related charges stemming from an attack on a Hazel Township woman. State Police says the attack so brutal... she is still recovering from injuries. No date has been set for Paulino's hearing.

 

WHLM Sports

Berwick HS Football

The Berwick High School football team will go to the state semifinals for the first time since 2004. Friday night the Bulldogs trounced Clearfield 44-7 in a Class AAA state quarterfinal at Central Mountain High School in Mill Hall. Berwick remains unbeaten going into the Semifinals against Archbishop Wood, who beat Academy Park 42-12 Friday night. BU Football

The Bloomsburg University football team faces West Chester tomorrow afternoon in an NCAA regional semifinal game at Danny Hale Field in Redman Stadium. It's a rematch of a game played at West Chester on November 9th won by the Huskies 31-28. Saturday's game kicks off at noon. Coverage on the whlm stations begins at 10 O'clock with The Husky Tailgate Show.

 

BU Womens BB

The Bloomsburg University women's basketball team plays Goldy-Beacom Sunday afternoon at 1 o'clock at Nelson Field House. Coverage on the whlm stations begins with the pregame show at 12:40.

 

NFL

In the NFL Sunday afternoon, the Detroit Lions routed the Green Bay Packers 40-10 and the Dallas Cowboys got by the Oakland Raiders 31-24. Thursday night in Baltimore... the Ravens holding off the Pittsburgh Steelers 22 to 20.
