Bloomsburg Churches Burglarized

A 36 – year old Freeland man is in the Columbia County Prison after allegedly burglarizing two Bloomsburg churches early Wednesday morning. The Press – Enterprise is reporting on it's Facebook page that Scott Navar was found hiding in a window well at the first Presbyterian Church at the corner of Market and 4th Streets. It appears Navar ransacked the interior of the church. One of the items found in a pocket was small flashlight with the imprint “Wesley UM Church.” Upon checking the church at 3rd and Market... police found that the place had been ransacked... cash drawers opened... as well as three laptops and a monitor missing. Navar is facing a long list of felony charges. After a preliminary arraignment.. he was hustled off to the prison with bail set at $100,000.


School Bus Accident

The driver of a school bus which went off the road and flipped on it's side Tuesday in Montour County... will be cited for driving too fast for conditions. Authorities say 72 – year old Calvin Straub lost control of the bus on a right hand turn on Klein Road and went down an embankment. He was transporting kids to the Columbia – Montour Vo – Tech school in North Centre Township. 14 kids were on the bus. All were taken to Geisinger Medical Center where most were treated and released. Three of the kids were held overnight for observation.


Heroin Death

One of two men remain in the Columbia County Prison... facing a host of felony drug – related charges after an Elysburg woman overdosed on herion and later died. 34 – year old Erika Smith overdosed at the Winding Way home of 26 – year old Gregory Shepard of Catawissa. Also charged is 25 – year old Bryant Leiby of Danville. Shepard is out of jail... with bail money provided by his parents. Smith died Sunday of the overdose at the Geisinger Medical Center in Danville.


Susquehanna Thruway

It's been kicked around for 40 years or so, but ground may be broken next year for the $558 – million Central Susquehanna Valley Thruway. In Shamokin Dam Tuesday... PennDOT Secretary Barry Schoch says the proposed project is funded through the newly adopted $2.3 - billion Transportation bill signed into law this week. Schoch says the Thruway is a “legacy” project. The Thruway would run from Routes 147 and 405 in Chillisquaque Township in Northumberland County to Routes 11 and 15 near the Susquehanna Mall.


PennDOT / Bridges

The 500 bridges posted with lower weight restrictions by the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation over the past three months may remain posted for two years or more. That... despite the state’s new multi-billion dollar transportation plan, according to a department spokesman. Two hundred more bridges targeted for posting may receive a reprieve in light of the controversial plan signed into law by Republican Gov. Tom Corbett this week.


Hazleton Budget

Hazleton City officials are trying to put together a budget for next year... but first they must close a $500,000 spending gap in this year's budget. To cover that... Hazleton city workers may go the rest of the year without being paid. Under current plans.... Fifty of 110 city employees will be furloughed next Monday if council doesn’t find a way to close the budget gap. Essential employees, like city firefighters would continue to work, but without pay.



A Hazleton man will spend up to ten years in prison for sexually assaulting a child. Lanning Vagts was sentenced Tuesday from 18 to 120 months in prison. A Luzerne County court judge also found him to be a sexually violent predator... and subject to Megan's Law registration for life.


Corbett Poll

Governor Tom Corbett's approval rating is not what it should be. A new poll by Democratic – leaning Public Policy Polling shows only a quarter of the 693 registered voters survey approve of the governor's job performance... with 65% disapproving. The head of the North Carolina – based firm suggesting that Corbett resign. But a Corbett spokesman says that's not going to happen.


WHLM Sports

Run for the Diamonds

Anywhere from 1,500 to 1,800 runners are expected to answer the starting gun Thursday morning at Second and Market Streets in Berwick for the 104th annual Run for the Diamonds. The nine mile road race begins at 10:30. Coverage on the WHLM Stations begins following the ten o'clock news.


BU Football

When the Bloomsburg University football team plays West Chester Saturday in an NCAA playoff game at Danny Hale Field in Redman Stadium, the Huskies will be facing one of the best offenses in the PSAC. Saturday's West Chester at Bloomsburg game, which starts at noon, is a regional semifinal. In the other semifinal, Winston Salem State plays Shepherd in Shepherdstown, West Virginia.


BU Wrestling

On Sunday, the Bloomsburg University wrestling team will be competing in a venue known as "The World's Most Famous Arena." The Huskies will be wrestling in an event called "The Grapple at the Garden" at Madison Square Garden in New York City. At 10 O'clock the Huskies will take on Illinois, and at noon, they will go up against Penn.
