The National Weather Service has posted a Winter Weather Advisory through 9 O'clock Tuesday night. We could be in for some rough weather the next two days.
Forecasters are keeping an eye on a big glob of moisture coming from deep in Dixie... possibly disrupting travel plans for those of us who have plans to travel over the Thanksgiving holiday. The questionable weather in the Susquehanna Valley late Tuesday with a wintry mix. Depending what model you're looking at we could get as little as an inch of snow... as well as freezing rain and sleet.... to anywhere to up to two inches.
I-80 Closed for Accident
A collision between a tractor – trailer and a car... and the resulting fire shut down the eastbound lane of Interstate 80 for hours Monday afternoon. Our media partner... Newswatch 16... says the accident happened near the Mifflinville interchange... when a trucker pulled out to pass... and didn't see a car in his blind spot. The two collided with the big rig overturning. That backed up traffic all the way to the Lightstreet Interchange. No one was injured in that accident in Mifflin Township.
Columbia Co. Budget
Columbia County Commissioners are expected to give a final approval on a proposed 2014 budget. It totals $21.3 – million with no tax increase... something that Commissioner David Kovach is part of being frugal. Meantime... the county's 2013 budget will finish the year with a $600,000 surplus... something not many county's across the state will experience. Approval on the proposed spending plan will take place early next month.
Schoch / Transportation
By the end of business Monday.... Governor Corbett will sign that newly approved $2.3– billion dollar transportation bill into law. It was approved last week by the state House and Senate. Appearing on a recent edition of the WHLM Morning Buzz... PennDOT Secretary Barry Schoch telling Joe and Norm that there are 25,000 bridges across the state... half of them are structurally deficient. Secretary Schoch said may were built in the 30's by Governor Pinchot to get farmers out of the mud so they could get their products to market.... others were built when the Interstate highway system was constructed and need attention.
Transportation / Hazleton
The newly passed $2.3 - billion dollar transportation bill brings at least one major road project to the Hazleton area. It involves Route 424... and extends the route into the Humboldt Industrial Park. Once constructed it would be a secondary access to Interstate 81... relieving traffic on Route 924.
Bloomsburg Police... along with State Liquor Control Enforcement officers raided an party with alleging underage drinker at a house on East Third Street at the start of the weekend. BloomUtoday is reporting that of the 68 people at the party... 42 were given citations for underage drinking and possession. The incident taking place in the 400 – block of East Third Street.
A Berwick man remains in the Columbia County Prison after he was arrested by police on a long list of charges. Police Chief Ken Strish say 25 – year old Thomas Thoryk of Good Avenue is charged with burglarizing a half – dozen homes... allegedly taking four firearms... a pick up truck and $2,000 in currency and jewelry. Thoryk's crimes came to an end when he sold one of the stolen firearms to a local gun store. He's jailed on $50,000 straight cash bond.
Wright Twp. Fire
A Wright Township family is getting help from the American Red Cross after a fire damaged their home at the start of the weekend. The fire apparently began in the basement of the home on Wood Street.. and spread to the first floor. No injuries were reported..
Hunlock Creek Crash
Police aren't saying much about a crash in the Sweet Valley area of Luzerne County early Sunday morning. Our media partner... Newswatch 16 is reporting that a car ran off Main Road in Hunlock Creek... slamming into the foundation of a wooden barn. It was first believed the barn would collapse... but it was stabilized while getting the driver out. The crash remains under investigation.
Barletta / Shippensburg
Congressman Lou Barletta is on the road Monday... in Cumberland County. He's expected to make remarks at the Shippensburg Area Chamber of Commerce at noon time. Mr. Barletta later moves on to a tour of Shippensburg businesses... followed by attending Student Financial Aid Night at Shippensburg University. A spokesperson for Congressman Barletta says it allows the two – term Republican from Hazleton to get familiar with businesses in the 11th congressional district.
