Berwick Roundtable

A range of updates Thursday night... as the Berwick Area United Way held a community round table as to how issues have progressed over the past year. One group really getting a foot hold in Berwick's way of life is the Blue Print Community... trying to spruce up neighborhoods... especially on the west side.

The organizer is Jay Jarrett.... and he told me residents are responding. For example... over the past couple of weeks... the Blue Print Community has held walks through neighborhoods on Mulberry, Vine and LaSalle Streets in order to show borough solidarity.


Transportation Bill

A $2.3 – billion transportation funding bill is expected to be on Governor Corbett's desk by the end of the day. It's designed to raise money to repair roads and bridges... and to help mass transit in the state's larger cities. But State Representative David Millard says one of the highlights is an increase in the liquid fuel tax coming back to Columbia County. Representative Millard making his remarks on the Thursday edition of the WHLM Morning Buzz.


Musto Indictment

An indictment has been handed down against former state Senator Raphael Musto of the Wyoming Valley. He is now accused of taking a $1,000 bribe from a municipal official days before voting in favor of an $11 – million loan. Although the official or municipality isn't named in the indictment... state records show PENNVEST okayed the loan to Salem Township... near Berwick... for a 2006 sewer project. A trial is set for January on earlier indictments against the former long – time Pittston lawmaker.


Minimum Wage

Democratic State Representative Patty Kim of Dauphin County is proposing legislation calling for a high in the minimum wage. Good for those who are paid minimum wage... bad for small business.

Fred Gaffney... president of the Columbia Montour Chamber of Commerce... doesn't believe the issue will gain traction. Representative Kim's legislation calls for hiking the minimum wage from it's current $7.25 to $9.00an hour... then to $10.10 the following year.


Artist Reception

If you stop by the Bloomsburg office of State Representative David Millard... you'll be able to take a look at the work of several area artisans. Tillie Wenner – Chapman... used to live in Benton... and does oil paintings on plaster board of bays, boats and street scenes. Ms. Wenner – Chapman says artists don't get the respect they deserve. Artwork from Ms. Wenner – Chapman... Linda Densberger of Danville and Anna Shecktor of Berwick will be on display in Representative Millard's office the next few weeks.


Court Ruling

A Luzerne County judge has ruled that a 16 – year old driver accused of hitting a man during a high speed crash will stand trial for third degree murder. Tyler Duda of Wyoming is accusing of hitting 59 – year old Nickolas Zurilla in the 300 block of West Union Street while traveling at 72 miles an hour. The incident happened July 5th of this year. Duda is being held in the Luzerne County Jail on a million dollars bail.


Coal Twp Burglary

Authorities in Northumberland County are searching for the burglars that made off with an estimated $4,000 in tools. The tools were taken from a house church volunteers are remodeling. The volunteers are from Restoration Ministries Church in Coal Township... and they were remodeling a house on Spruce Street. The thieves got into the house by kicking in the front door.

Three area high school football teams tried to advance in the postseason playoffs Friday night. You can hear the results in the WHLM Friday Night Football Update:



Berwick HS Football

Berwick stays unbeaten as they held back Bethlehem Catholic in Allentown in a Class AAA first round state playoff game. The final score was a 29-27 Bulldogs victory.


Danville HS Football

The Ironmen of Danville came up short in their bid for their second straight District 4 championship as they fell to Troy in the Class AA final at Ironmen Stadium. The final score was Troy 35, Danville 14.


Southern Columbia HS Football

The Tigers of Southern Columbia were handed their first defeat of the season by Old Forge in a Class A first round state playoff game. That game ended in a final of Old Forge 19, Southern Columbia 14.


BU Wrestling

The Bloomsburg University wrestling team beat Arizona State Friday night at Nelson Field House, 18-15.


College Basketball

Saturday afternoon, the BU Huskies play on the road at Lock Haven. The Women's game tips off at 1PM. Coverage on the WHLM stations starts with the pregame at 12:40.



In the NFL Thursday night... the New Orleans Saints downed the Atlanta Falcons 17 – 13.
