Water Valve Replacement
There will be a construction project on Main Street in Bloomsburg overnight. United Water will begin a valve replacement project at Main and Iron Streets starting at 1 AM Tuesday morning. The utility's Bob Manbeck says the four hour project will cause sporadic water outages to subscribers along Main Street... between Iron and Market. The valve has been a problem for United Water for some time... witnessed by water seeping from the under the street. Manbeck says the problem should be taken care of by installing a 300 pound valve on a six inch in diameter water main at the heavily – traveled intersection.
Faith – based AGAPE is doing it's part to get aid to the cyclone – stricken Philippines. They're working with partner Mission Central... who AGAPE worked with during the flooding of September of 2011.... so says AGAPE's Kathy Lowe. Items such as unopened medical supplies... infant formula and personal care items. Ms. Lowe says items can be dropped off at AGAPE on East 7th Street in Bloomsburg.
Pursuing drivers... and stopping them cold in their tracks. That's the object of the Bloomsburg Police Department purchasing ten stop sticks... not only for the new cruisers coming on line... but for outlying departments, as well. Bloomsburg Police Chief Roger Van Loan says the $4,300 purchase comes from suspected drunk drivers who come through the Columbia – Montour County DUI Center at 8th and Catherine Streets. Chief Van Loan says there really haven't been pursuits in town in recent memory... but adds they're nice to have when the situation arises.
One Powerball ticket worth a million dollars for Saturday's drawing was sold in Luzerne County. Lottery officials tell us that the winning ticket was sold at the Grand Smoke Shop in the 200 block of West Mine Street in Hazleton. The ticket matched all the white numbers drawn... but not the red Powerball number. So far... no one has come forward with the winning ticket.
Berwick Mayor – Elect
The new mayor – elect of Berwick can't wait to assume office. Tim Burke says he has goals starting in 2014... and he wants to work closely with Berwick Police Chief Ken Strish. Burke is sworn into office in early January and has high expectations in cleaning up crime in the Borough....
Meth House Legislation
Legislation is in the works to provide notification to buyers or renters when a property they're looking at has been used as a meth lab. It's a proposed law being promoted by State Senator John Rafferty... a Republican of Berks County. Senators Rafferty and Gene Yaw of Lycoming County says meth production can leave residual chemicals that can cause severe respiratory and nervous system ailments.
The state's newly hired state university chancellor will be in Bloomsburg this week. Frank Brogan will visit the BU campus Wednesday to attend a midday forum. Brogan came to Pennsylvania last month... after serving as the chancellor of the Florida public university system.... and at one time was the Sunshine State's Lt. Governor. Wednesday's forum will be held in the McCormick Center.
Run for the Diamonds
With the terrorist bombing in Boston earlier this year... security will be paramount on Thanksgiving day for the annual Run for the Diamonds in Berwick. Race organizer Margaret Livsey says security will be heightened... and a couple of new rules will be in place.... such as no back packs inside the Elk's building on 3rd Street. The Run for the Diamonds gets underway at mid-morning on Thanksgiving Day... with live coverage on the WHLM Stations.
Bloomsburg Fire Alarm
Bloomsburg firemen were called out shortly before midnight on Sunday to the 100 block of West Main Street. Someone calling in a report of the smell of electrical smoke in an apartment building. The fire chief... his deputies and one engine responded to scene only to discover the hot water heater for the apartment had gone on the fritz. All were back at the fire station 20 minutes after they were called.
The State Fire Marshal should know by the end of business Monday as to what sparked a blaze over the weekend... which extensively damaged three vacant homes... as well as a fourth occupied structure in the 200 block of Chestnut Street in Shenandoah. Authorities say a kitchen fire may have started in the home of Eugene Jadus... but they want to know the exact cause.
Four Tamaqua area residents are facing shoplifting charges after they allegedly tried to take products from the Wal – Mart store on Airport Road... in Hazle Township on Sunday. State Police at Hazleton telling us the four were spotted by store security allegedly taking clothing items... holiday cards and DVD's. All faced preliminary arraignments.
Penn State Death
The investigation resumes today into the death of a Penn State student who fell from the 9th floor of an apartment building over the weekend in State College. Police believe drugs and alcohol may have been a factor in the death 20 – year old Conor MacMannis of Virginia. The incident happening at the Penn Towers Apartments early Saturday morning.
