Southern Soccer

The Southern Columbia girls soccer team lost their bid for the Class A state championship in Hershey Friday evening. They were defeated by defending champions Greensburg Central Catholic. In a game televised on PCN television... Southern Columbia got a 1 to nothing lead... and held that going into half – time. However, during the second half... Greensburg got their act together. The final score... Greensburg over Southern 2 to 1.

 

Arrest Made in Berwick Shooting

A 17 – year old teenager is facing a long list of charges stemming from a shooting last month in the 500 block of LaSalle Street in Berwick. Police Chief Ken Strish telling us William Cordell Emmett is charged with four counts of aggravated assault... one count of receiving stolen property... one count of trying to erase a serial number from a weapon.. and one count of carrying a firearm without a license. 21 – year old Tyler Joseph Arias sustained a single gunshot would to his leg. Investigators putting their hands on an Iberia Firearms 40 – caliber handgun... as well as two two discharged cartridges. The serial number had been scratched from the weapon... which had been stolen from a Nescopeck home. Emmett was arraigned in front of District Justice Richard Knecht... with bail set at $125,000 straight cash. He's now in the Columbia County Prison in Bloomsburg.

 

Geisinger Wins!!

The campaigning is done, the last vote is in and the winner of Medline Industries, Inc.’s third annual national Pink Glove Dance video competition is… Geisinger Health System in Danville. The Pink Glove Dance unites 80,000 clinicians, survivors and communities throughout North America in a fun and memorable way to support breast cancer awareness and prevention – all through the spirit of dance. Thanks to record number 95,623 votes cast for Geisinger Health System’s video, the hospital will receive a $25,000 donation from Medline to its breast cancer charity of choice, the American Cancer Societies of Central and Northeastern PA. Geisinger also donated $2,500 to The Pennsylvania Breast Cancer Coalition as part of their participation in the competition, contributing to the nearly $1 million raised by all the participants for breast cancer education and early detection.

 

Philippines Help

Nearly a week since a powerful typhoon struck a part of the Philippines... relief supplies are finally getting to the victims. The international Red Cross is in charge... doing it's best to help... but they're getting some assistance from the American Red Cross.... so says Rita Inklovich of the Bloomsburg Chapter. In this country... and locally as well... money is being donated either through social media... smart phones... or checks being dropped off at the local chapters... money, if so designated, will go to relief efforts.

 

Berwick Roundtable

A roundtable discussion is on tap for next Thursday... hearing from non – profit groups trying to make a difference in Berwick. Ginny Crake of the Berwick Area United Way... says next week's roundtable is some what different that a similar meeting which took place last fall. The community wide meeting will take place next Thursday... starting at 5:30 in the Berwick High School Auditorium.

 

Newell Hearing

The man accused of killing three people at a Ross Township supervisors meeting... in Monroe County... in August will stand trial. Rockne Newell was the focus of a preliminary hearing in Stroudsburg on Thursday. Bone – chilling audio tape of the incident was played. No trial date has been set, but prosecutors are seeking the death penalty.

 

Sunbury Murder

Police are now looking for the individuals responsible for the death of a man who's body was found in the backyard of a Catawissa Avenue home in Sunbury this week. Authorities say Troy LaFerrara of Port Treverton was stabbed to death. Sunbury Police Chief Stephen Mazzeo said investigators are following leads... adding that despite the stabbing death.... people who live in the neighborhood aren't in any danger.

 

Holden / Liquor Control Board

Former US Representative Tim Holden has been sworn in for a seat on the state liquor control board. He won confirmation earlier this week. Earlier this year... the Schuylkill County Democrat was nominated for the job. It comes at a time when Governor Corbett is trying to take the state's liquor system private.

 

Mohegan Sun

There was a ribbon cutting ceremony Thursday for a new hotel at Mohegan Sun at Pocono Downs. The 7 story... 238 room hotel and 20,000 square foot convention center has a price tag of an estimated $50 – million. Construction began more than a year ago... with the company hiring 250 people for the hotel and convention center.

 

Man Caught

A Hazleton man is behind bars after police chased and caught a suspected drug dealer. Police say 28 – year old Ariel Alvarez was caught selling an estimated 600 bags of heroin early Thursday morning. He took off and was eventually found in a home on Pierce Street in Kingston. Alvarez is now in the Luzerne County Jail.

 

WHLM Sports

Friday night playoff action on News Radio 930 Danville hosted Loyalsock.  Loysock was leading 21-7 going into halftime.  Danville came back to win the very close game 28-21.  With there win they will host Troy next Friday night.
