Standing up for what's right in neighborhoods across Berwick. That's what members of the Berwick Blue Print Community is doing... attempting to rid streets of drugs and crime. Wednesday night... about two dozen people walked the length of LaSalle Street... a somewhat troubled neighborhood these days. Organizer Tim Burke says the groups efforts will work. Burke is also Berwick's Mayor – elect and takes office the first of the year. He told me he's looking forward to working closely with Police Chief Ken Strish.
Scott Twp Budget
It is budget preparation time for municipalities across the region. Reading the legal notices... it appears places like Scott Township is way ahead of the curve. Township Secretary Eric Stahley says supervisors have done their work... and the $1.1 - million proposal is on display at the municipal building on Tenny Street. Stahley says there are no surprises in the proposed 2014 spending plan... including no plans to raise property taxes. The Supervisors are expected to approve the package when they meet on the 26th of the month.
PennDOT / Winter
We're getting our first seasonal shot of cold weather... but it's the snow and ice experienced on our daily drive that worries a lot of us. However, PennDOT is looking out for us when snow and ice hit.... so says the agency's Rick Mason. He says there is plenty of staffing throughout District 3... which includes Columbia and Montour Counties... and there is unused money in the budget to make sure road clearing operations are not hampered.
Run for Diamonds
Last minute details are being ironed out for this month's Run for the Diamonds in Berwick... scheduled to be held on Thanksgiving Day. Event organizer Margaret Livsey says entries for the event continue to pour in... with about 600 people entering thus far, with the list to grow to 1,800 on race day. And Ms. Livsey says security will be tightened for the 104th annual Run for the Diamonds following the finish line terrorist attack in Boston earlier this year.
Catholics in Pennsylvania and around the world are intrigued by the first-ever pastoral survey to originate from the Vatican. Victoria Laskowski of the Diocese of Harrisburg says the survey has been circulated to 89 parishes. A 39-question survey deals with topics ranging from marriage according to natural law, to Catholic teaching on the value of family.
A Hazle Township woman is headed to court to stand trial in the death of her boyfriend. Jessica Alinsky is accused of shooting and killing Matthew Gailie at the home they shared at the Eagle Rock development near Hazleton in September of 2011. Investigators say Alinsky shot Gailie... then telling troopers he was shot by someone... changing her story to taking his own life. Following an appearance before a district judge on Tuesday... she was hustled off to the Luzerne County lockup.
Sherman Hills Shooting
A 21 - year old man is in custody... charged the the death of of a woman... shot three times at the Sherman Hills apartment complex in Wilkes – Barre. Kenneth Evans the Third is charged with criminal homicide in the death of Shantique Goodson. The death of Ms. Goodson is the 13th homicide in Wilkes – Barre this year. Police say Goodson was arguing with two men... one of them Evans... when three gunshots were fired. The woman later died at the Geisinger Wyoming Valley Medical Center. Both Evans and Goodson have been in trouble with the law in the past.
Police investigators in Sunbury say they're investigating the death of a man in his 40's. His body was found behind a home on Catawissa Avenue on Tuesday. Police aren't saying much... but Police Chief Stephen Mazzeo called the death suspicious. They have yet to release the man's name.... or how he died.
That detour on Routes 11 and 54 in Danville will soon be lifted. Danville Borough Administrator Dan Knorr says the detour was established some months ago for a levee closure project... but will disappear Thursday evening. The detour has been a pain in the neck for commuters... forcing driver to go an additional block north... then making a left hand turn to get on Route 54.
A Williamsport man is in trouble with the law. Matthew Romero was arrested in Milton... in Northumberland County following a traffic stop over the weekend. Police say officers found 98 bags of heroin worth about $2,000. After making his first court appearance... Romero was locked up in the Northumberland jail in Sunbury.
Schuylkill County Fire
A fire marshal will try an determine what started a blaze in a vacant home in Schuylkill County on Monday. The house on Kaska Street in Middleport has been vacant for some time. No first responders were hurt battling the blaze.
