Concealed Carry Class
An estimated 200 people showed up Thursday night at the Reliance Fire Hall in Berwick to take concealed carry class for firearms. Columbia County Sheriff Tim Chamberlain was there and so was District Attorney Tom Leipold... who spoke on the law of self – defense. Sheriff Chamberlain spoke on how to safely interact with police while you are carrying a weapon. Due to popularity... it's expected more concealed carry classes will be held right after the first of the year.
State Representative David Millard holding one in a series of seminars designed for individuals who act as caregivers... for family and friends... in the twilight of their years. The concerns... according to Representative Millard... is finances and care. Thursday's seminar was held at the Millville Health Care Center... featuring a elder care attorney... the Columbia – Montour office of aging.. as well as folks representing other facets of end of life care.
The state of Pennsylvania is offering up substantial subsidies for natural gas production... and Governor Corbett is leading the charge. Those state subsidies could top a billion dollars in the next decade. But, Christina Simeone of PennFuture Energy Center says that money may be better invested elsewhere. It's Governor Corbett's view that natural gas exploration is a way the state can become an industrial powerhouse again.
Bob Mellow in NEPA
Former state Senate Democratic Leader Robert Mellow is back in Northeastern Pennsylvania. The 70 year old Mellow is now staying at a half – way house in Scranton. If you recall, he was sentenced to 16 months in federal prison after he was convicted on bribery and kickback charges. Mellow's sentenced is due to end in March.
Still no President announced to head Penn State University. Their top prospect is Dr. David Smith who currently heads the Upstate Medical University in Albany, New York. However, PSU's search for a new president uncovered questions about Dr. Smith... according to a report on Syracuse.com. The website says Dr. Smith was placed on leave by the State University of New York over allegations he padded his pay.
Sewer Line Extension
Rush Township supervisors... near Hazleton... say plans are underway for the Lincoln Drive sanitary sewer line extension. Now... environmental impact statements will be assessed and funding secured. The million dollar project will connect residential and commercial properties at Lincoln Drive... going under US 309... and connecting to an existing line. Construction could begin as early as the spring of 2014.
Suspected Meth Lab
A suspected rolling meth lab went up in flames Thursday near the Frances Slocum State Park in Luzerne County. Five people were eventually taken to the hospital for treatment... including a Good Samaritan and two EMT's. Police say Jennifer Arnold and Lee Marshal were in the SUV... when a container with the meth blew up. Thus far... no charges have been filed.
PPL Ripped Off
A Wilkes – Barre man is facing charges after he allegedly stole power from Pennsylvania Power and Light. 59 – year old Joseph Brown of Carbon Lane is charged with risking a catastrophe... theft of services and criminal mischief. The utility getting a tip that Brown was ripping off PPL since the house had no power for several years. It's believe Brown stole an estimated $3,800 worth of juice.

High School Football
High school football's postseason playoffs began Friday night. In our Game of the Week, Defending District 4 AA champion Danville staved off Lewisburg in a quarterfinal game that ended 23-6.
In a District 4 Class A semifinal heard on Classic Rock 103.5, Southern Columbia beat Bloomsburg 49-14.
Saturday afternoon Berwick plays Crestwood at Crispin Field in a District 2 Class AAA semifinal. Coverage on Classic Rock 103.5 begins at noon with The Coach Curry Show.
In college football Saturday, Bloomsburg University plays at unbeaten West Chester with the winner to play in next week's PSAC championship game. Coverage on the WHLM Stations begins at 12:30 with The Husky Countdown Show.
The Bloomsburg University Men's basketball team fell to Chestnut Hill in their season opener Friday night 68-62.
In the NFL Thursday night... the Minnesota Vikings defeated the Washington Redskins 34 to 27.
In college football, in a match up of two of the nation's top five teams..Stanford getting by Oregon 26 to 20.
