The three incumbents seeking reelection to their seats on the Bloomsburg Town Council have won. In voting Tuesday.... and unofficial returns show that it appears Bill Kreischer... Carey Howell and Sylvia Costa have retained their seats. Challengers Oren Helbok... Joe Martarano and Tyson Auchter failed in their bid to unseat the incumbents. Bloomsburg officially has a new Mayor – elect. Although Sandy Davis won the spring primary for the job... it wasn't official until Tuesday's voting. Ms. Davis... a retired Berwick school teacher... says she learned one big issue during the campaign and that is to listen to residents.
Turning our attention to the Mayor's race in Berwick... unofficial returns show that Democrat Tim Burke has easily defeated Republican Kirk Bower. Seven candidates were seeking the four vacant seats on Borough Council. Travis Petty... Jim Meighan... Scott Bower and Pete Talanca were elected. Matt Rishkofski... Jean Greco and Vicky Fish coming up short in their election bid.
One Columbia County official said his day was slower than usual. Chief Registrar Matt Repasky said there were no problems in any of the 42 precincts across the county. No machine troubles or power outages. Now... Mr. Repasky and his staff will start producing a ballot for the 2014 spring primary right around the first of the year.
Luzerne County Elections
A big win for incumbents in Luzerne County. They retained control of the Luzerne County Council and fended off a challenge from a Democratic slate hostile to the current administration.
Route 45 Fatal
A former Millville woman is dead. Megan Dilick... now of Lewisburg.... was killed in a two – vehicle crash on Route 45 in West Chillisquaque Township. State police believe Ms. Dilick may have fallen asleep at the wheel after completing her shift as a registered nurse at the Geisinger Medical Center in Danville. Wednesday's edition of the Press – Enterprise is reporting she lost control of her car on a curve... and slammed into an SUV driven by John McIlwaine... another Geisinger employee... apparently on his way to work. She was pronounced dead at Geisinger's E-R.
Another in a series of concealed carry class for firearms is on tap for Thursday at the Reliance Fire Hall in Berwick. For Columbia County Sheriff Tim Chamberlain License to carry concealed firearms permits are on the rise. Also on hand for the class will be Columbia County District Attorney Tom Leipold. The class is being sponsored by State Represented David Millard... and begins at 6 O'clock Thursday at the Reliance Fire Hall on West Third Street in Berwick.
NEPA Gas Prices
The price of self – serve, unleaded regular gasoline is holding somewhat steady. The Triple A Fuel Gauge report out shows that... across northeastern Pennsylvania... that gas is retailing for an average of $3.28 – a – gallon... the same as it was earlier in the week. That's down two cents a gallon from a week ago.... and down 9 cents from a month ago.
A Wilkes – Barre resident is facing aggravated assault and driving under the influences charges after leading police on a pursuit. 29 – year old Anthony Scott crashed into a marked cruiser. When cops pulled him from his car... they found crack caked around his mouth. The incident stemmed from a surveillance operation on Empire Street
Casino & Kids
Children as young as 14 are sneaking into casinos to try their luck at a roulette wheel or slot machine — a costly problem for Pennsylvania gaming operators who are lobbying for tougher penalties for underage gamblers. Doug Harbach, spokesman for the state Gaming Control Board, said underage gambling is a “pretty big issue” at the state's 12 casinos.
A new report says too many children still lack the skills they need to success by third grade and there are differences based on race and income. Laura Speer, Associate Director for Policy Reform Advocacy at the Annie E. Casey Foundation, says the report shows many children are not where they should be by third grade. Ms. Speer says 61% of PA low income children are not enrolled in preschool, slightly below the national average, but still too high:
When the Southern Columbia and Bloomsburg high school football teams meet this Friday in a District 4 Class A semifinal, it will be a rematch of a game on October 11th won by Southern. Tigers coach Jim Roth is concerned with Bloomsburg's passing attack. You can hear Friday's Bloomsburg at Southern Columbia game on Classic Rock 103.5 starting with the pregame show at 6:30.
The Bloomsburg University football team is 6th this week in the Super Region One rankings that will eventually decide which teams make it to the NCAA playoffs. The Huskies play at West Chester Saturday afternoon. The Golden Rams are unbeaten and ranked first in the region.
In the first round of the state high school soccer playoffs Tuesday... in boys Class A... Bloomsburg defeated Trinity 1 to nothing. In boys Class AA... Danville downed Tunkhannock 2 to 1. In Girls Class A... it was Southern Columbia over Schuylkill Haven 5 to 3... and Tuplehocken defeated Millville 3 to 1.
