News Update

Good Evening... I'm WHLM's Mark Williams at the Columbia County Courthouse Annex in Bloomsburg. It's apparent that the three incumbents seeking reelection to their seats on the Bloomsburg Town Council have won. In complete, but unofficial returns from the five precincts in Bloomsburg... it appears Bill Kreischer... Carey Howell and Sylvia Costa have retained their seats. Challengers Oren Helbok... Joe Martarano and Tyson Auchter failed in their bid to unseat the incumbents. In Berwick's 2nd Ward... Jim Meighan is the top vote getter thus far... followed by Travis Petty... Pete Talanka... Scott Bower... Vicky Fish... Jean Greco and Matt Rishkofski.

 

 

Energy Help

The Berwick Blueprint Community and the Reliance Fire Company is hosting a seminar Wednesday night dealing with lowering energy consumption and assistance. The Fire Company's Bridgette Coolbaugh says there will be a representative from the Public Utility Commission on hand to talk about billing... how to safe money and a host of other issues. The seminar gets underway at 6 O'clock at the Reliance Fire Hall on West Third Street...

 

Diabetes Month
Nearly 26 million children and adults in the U S have diabetes. Prevention is the focus as we make American Diabetes Month. Nearly 1 in 10 adults in Pennsylvania is living with diabetes. The American Diabetes Association is focusing on the toll the disease takes on health. Two out of three people die from related heart disease or stroke. Its the leading cause of kidney failure and the leading cause of new cases of blindness among adults. The rate of amputations is 10 times higher than people without diabetes.

 

Fatal Accident

A 21 – year old Hazleton man is dead after his car crashed on Commerce Drive in Hazle Township. State Police at Hazleton say Edward Cabezas – Bonilla sustained massive head injuries as his car flipped and rolled over into a storage late Sunday night. But... his car wasn't discovered until after daybreak Monday. Police say the driver died at the scene.

 

Carbon Co. Explosion

One person is dead after a Monday afternoon explosion tore through a home in Kidder Township in near by Carbon County at Lake Harmony. Authorities have not released the name of the victim... but two other people who lived in the home were taken to a hospital for treatment. Now... it's up to a state fire marshal to determine what called Monday's explosion and fire in Carbon County.

 

Wilkes Sex Assault

Heightened awareness is a must these days on the campus of Wilkes University. That... after a students was allegedly sexually assaulted. Our media partner... Newswatch 16 is reporting that the attack happened early Sunday morning in an off – campus apartment. The suspect in the attack has not been identified.

 

Construction Project

That detour at the intersection of Routes 11 and 54 in Danville has been extended... at least until the 7th of the month. Construction on a flood control project in the area has been going on since July... and it was originally believed that the detour could be lifted late last week. However... delayed concrete delivery has affected the work of the contractor to preform curbing and paving work... necessitating the detour extension.
