Geisinger – Bloomsburg
There is a bright future for the Geisinger – Bloomsburg Hospital.... now that it's come under the wing of Danville – based Geisinger Health System about a year – and -a – half ago. That word from Hospital CEO Lissa Bryan – Smith. During a forum Wednesday... Ms. Bryan – Smith there's always room for smaller facilities like Bloomsburg and Shamokin... as well as the main campus in Danville. Since merging with GHS... Bloomsburg has seen an upgrade in a medical records system which goes on line this weekend... and the opening of an urgent care center on the local campus.
A former Berwick school crossing time will not get a retrial he requested. 66 – year old Dale Hutchings was in Columbia County Court Wednesday afternoon... asking Judge Tom James for a second trial following his 2008 conviction on sexually abusing children. The Press – Enterprise is reporting in Thursday's edition... Hutchings claimed he was not given proper advice from public defender Hugh Sumner. Right now... Hutchings is serving a sentence of between 225 and 460 years for his conviction at the Rockview state prison near Bellefonte.
Berwick Police are doing their jobs.... cracking down on the drug trade... especially meth houses. Those houses have become a focal point for Police Chief Ken Strish... and the on – going investigations have paid off. Chief Strish says a big plus is the help they get from federal and state agencies in ridding Berwick of it's drug problem.
Susquehanna Steam Electric
The Nuclear Regulatory Commission says the operators of the PPL Susquehanna Steam Electric Station... north of Berwick... will not have to pay $70,000 for violations discovered at the plant. The reason.... the company taking quick action to correct the problems. The company was notified of the problems in June dealing with eight licensed reactor operators who continued to work despite not meeting minimum health requirements. However, PPL did take corrective action by putting new procedures in place.
The seven people still living in a Columbia County community devastated by an underground mine fire started in 1962. will be able to stay. State and local officials say an agreement was reached this week with the remaining residents of Centralia allowing them to stay in their homes until they die. Once they pass away, the rights of their properties will be taken through eminent domain. The residents will also receive a total of $218,000 as part of a settlement with the state.
With the cold weather slowly moving in... Pennsylvanians who have a hard time paying their heating bills will soon have help at hand. The Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program... or LIHEAP is a federal initiative... and the grants it distributes don't have to be paid back. Harry Geller of the Pennsylvania Utility Law Project says the program is put together sometime before the federal budget is passed... meaning more money is released later. A year ago... LIHEAP delivered about $92 - million in routine heat grants to roughly 500,000 homes.
Residents of Luzerne County could be facing an 8 – % property tax increase. And the county could pink slip between 50 and 200 employees in the next few months. That's the assessment of County Administrator Robert Lawton during the first of four budget meetings this week. To do to prevent that... Lawton says... the county must get concessions from unions representing workers. Right now... Luzerne County is an estimated $400 – million in debt.
Wilkes – Barre Fire
Wilkes – Barre fire investigators are trying to figure out what started a fire in a vacant home Wednesday night. The double block house is located in the 200 block of Gilligan Street. Firefighters had little trouble in knocking down the blaze.
Sex Assault Arrest
Bail has been set at 100 – thousand dollars for a Luzerne County man arrested this week on child rape charges. 28 – year old Gary Machinshok of Wilkes – Barre allegedly sexually assaulted a young girl many times... starting when she was 14. No word his next court date.
The last time a Bloomsburg University football team played Shippensburg was in last season's NCAA playoffs. The Huskies were crushed by the Red Raiders 58-20. Shippensburg quarterback Zach Zulli threw for 479 yards and three touchdowns. Zulli, who won the Harlon Hill trophy as the nation's best Division II player, will lead his team Thursday night against the unbeaten Huskies at Danny Hale Field in Redman Stadium in a nationally televised game that will kickoff at 8:06.
