Wise Foods

Berwick firemen were busy last night... responding to a report of a fire at Wise Foods in the 200 block of Raseley Street after a potato chip fryer caught fire. Our media partner... Newswatch 16 reporting on their late edition... about 200 plant workers were evacuated. The fire was found in a small piece of insulation. Workers were eventually allowed back into the plant with production getting underway.

 

Espy Halloween Parade

There were Halloween parades across the region last night. One was held in Espy... the other in Benton.

The Scott Township police car leading the procession in Espy with the Central Columbia High School band providing the music for the long line of marchers. Kids and their parents dressed as their favorite characters... as the parade moved from the Fire Hall on Tenny street... to Central Road... to Old Berwick Road... then back. Another Halloween parade is scheduled for Wednesday night in Lime Ridge.

 

Veterans Day Parade

Saying “thanks” to all the men and women who served in the Armed Forces. That's the purpose of Bloomsburg's annual Veterans Day Parade which will be held on November 9th. Organizer Levonia Pollard telling us the Veterans Day Parade stage in the parking lot at the Geisinger – Bloomsburg hospital at 9 AM.... and will move down Lightstreet Road an hour later. The procession ends at the Bloomsburg Fire Department on Market Street... with a short speech and a meal for Vets.

 

State Universities

Pennsylvania’s 14 state universities will need an additional $69 - million in the coming fiscal year to simply break even. That's according to data presented to the State System of Higher Education Board of Governors earlier this month. The system has seen enrollment declines over the past three years and is projecting another small decline in Fiscal Year 2014-15. State taxpayer support of the system has been flat lined at $412 million during the last two budget years by the General Assembly.

 

Kids Health Care

A new report... released by Pennsylvania Partnerships for Children show 148,000 kids still lack health insurance. Joan Benso of the Partnership... says PA is in the process of rolling out a new marketing campaign to get parents more familiar with the Children's Health Insurance Program. Also there is a key change to make CHIP easier to access. Meantime... an estimated 20% of kids aren't getting timely vaccinations against preventable illnesses... such as polio and Hepatitis.

 

Amusement Rides

State lawmakers are finding that the problem with amusement parks is in the record-keeping, not matters of safety. Republican State Rep. John Maher of Allegheny County... says record-keeping for the amusement ride safety program needs to improve. Officials have told the the House Agriculture and Rural Affairs Committee, chaired by Representative Maher that they will overhaul their database on ride safety.

 

Charges Dismissed

Charges have been dropped against a Hazleton man... accused of making threats against the Luzerne County District Attorney. Sean Donahue was charged with sending threatening letters to DA Stefanie Salavantis in 2012. The judge hearing the case was persuaded to drop the charges after Donahue's attorney said the letter was protected by free speech.

 

Liquor & Money

A Hazleton area man faced a preliminary hearing Tuesday after being charged with allegedly making off with cash and liquor at a state store he used to manage in Dallas Township. Jeffrey Kaskiel from Drums is alleged to have made off with $2,100 and three bottles of booze. He was caught on security video taking the liquor. Kaskiel has been released and is expected back in court the first of the year.

 

Schuylkill Fire

They don't know what started an early Tuesday morning fire... but they do know... 11 people were forced from their home in Washington Township... in Schuylkill County. Of those eleven people... seven were children. Firemen were called to the home on Rock Road near Pine Grove. They say flames were shooting through the windows on the second floor. Luckily... no one was injured.

BU Football

The first Division II Super Region One rankings of the season have been released and the unbeaten Bloomsburg University football team is ranked third. West Chester is first and Shepherd is 2nd. At the end of the regular season, the top 6 teams in the region advance to the NCAA playoffs. The top two get first round byes and then a home game.

 

High School Soccer

In boys soccer Tuesday, in the District 4 Class AA semi – finals..Warrior Run defeated Central Columbia 1 to nothing. Danville got by Lewisburg 2 to 1. In a District 4 Class A semifinal... Bloomsburg downed Meadowbrook Christian 4 to 2. In the District 4 girls Class A semifinals... Southern Columbia blanked Troy 3 to nothing... and Millville outscored South Williamsport 4 to nothing.

 

NBA

In the opening game of the NBA regular season Tuesday night the defending champs Miami Heat defeated the Chicago Bulls 107 to 95.

 

MLB / World Series

Wednesday night at Fenway Park in Boston, it's game five of the World Series with the Red Sox leading the Saint Louis Cardinals three games to two.
