Windsor Foods

The reverberations are still being felt throughout the region on word that Windsor Foods in Bloomsburg will shut it's doors early next year. Windsor will also shutter a plant in Riverside, California. That move is expected to toss an estimated 160 local people out of work... but Fred Gaffney of the Columbia – Montour Chamber of Commerce says Windsor's decision wasn't unexpected.

 

Danville Flood Project

The Borough of Danville is putting some additional state money to work to insure the integrity of the flood control system. The nearly – half million dollars is left over funding from an H2O grant from the Department of Community and Economic Development. Danville Administrator Dan Knorr says the major problem is in Sechler and Blizzard Runs. Knorr said other areas to get attention is the construction of a wing wall at A Street... repairs to the Sechler Run pump station... and repairs to the Mahoning Creek flood wall. The work is expected to be wrapped up by the end of the year.

 

Sandusky Settlement

Penn State University has announced that it had settled a civil suit involving 26 victims from the Jerry Sandusky sex abuse scandal and will pay out nearly $60 - million. According to the university, it believes that its various liability insurance policies cover its settlements and defense of claims.

 

Carry Classes

Over the past few years... it's become an important part of our lives... now State Representative David Millard is holding a concealed carry class at the Reliance Fire Company in Berwick next month. Columbia County Sheriff Time Chamberlain will discuss how to safely interact with police while exercising the legal right to carry a firearm. Also to be on hand is Columbia County District Attorney Tom Leipold. The class takes place November 7th at the Reliance Fire Hall on Third Street starting at 6 O'clock. Call Representative Millard's office to sign up.

 

Hazleton Crash

A Monday crash at Club 40 Road and Stockton Mountain Road sent several people to the hospital for treatment. Police say the accident happened when a station wagon collided with a pick up truck in Hazle Township. Three people in the station wagon were taken to a near by hospital... two of which were flown to a trauma Center. The driver of the pick up taken to Hazleton General Hospital for treatment.

 

Wilkes – Barre Fire

Wilkes – Barre fire fighters took an aggressive stance as they knocked down a blaze Monday at a home in the 500 block of North Main Street. Investigators say the fire started at the rear of the home... but there is no definitive cause. The American Red Cross is helping the two adults and four children who lived in the structure.

 

Wilkes – Barre Ramada

The Ramada Hotel on the Square in Wilkes – Barre will soon be purchased by Kings College. The college says it will use the building for student housing... it's physician assistant studies and athletic training education programs. The price of the purchase has been pegged at $2.7 - million... but the college will invest nearly $12 - million for the first phase of renovation which begin just after the first of the year.

 

Sunbury Fire

A state police fire marshal spent part of Monday picking through the ruins of a fire which effected apartment buildings in the 200 block of Chestnut Street in Sunbury. Ten people are homeless after a Sunday afternoon fire. Authorities said there was extensive damage to the apartments at 253 and 255 Chestnut... and adjoining apartments at 257 and 249 Chestnut. One firefighter was slightly injured as he fought the blaze Sunday afternoon in Sunbury.

 

Volunteer Bill

The state House passed a bill to give a tax credit to employers who allow employees who are volunteer first responders to leave work and respond to emergencies. The bill also provides employment protection for responders in both the public and private sectors. It's designed to help the state retain and recruit more volunteers to the fire service.

BU Football

The unbeaten Bloomsburg University football team has moved up to 5th in the nation in this week's American Football Coaches Association poll. Two other PSAC teams are in the top 25- West Chester is 10th and Slippery Rock is 24th. This Thursday night at 8 O'clock at Danny Hale Field in Redman Stadium, the Huskies face a Shippensburg team that handed them their only two losses of last season.

In girls' soccer Monday, in a District 2 Class AA semifinal... Dallas defeated Berwick 4 to 2...

In field hockey, in a District 4 AA semifinal... Lewisburg just getting by Bloomsburg 2 to 1...

In the NFL last night... the Seattle Seahawks downed the St. Louis Rams 14 to 9...

 

MLB / World Series

In game five of the World Series... the Boston Red Sox getting by the St. Louis Cardinals 3 to 1. The victory now give Boston a three games to two edge over St. Louis.

 

NBA

The NBA regular season tips off Tuesday night with three games including the defending champion Miami Heat against the Chicago Bulls in South Florida.
