Windsor Foods to Shut Down

It's official.... Windsor Foods with a plant on W. 11th Street... will close their plant early next year... tossing up to 170 people out of work. Our media partner Newswatch 16 says Windsor's decision came following the flood of 2011. Earlier this year, Windsor Foods was part of a plan to place flood walls around their plant. Autoneum on 5th Street was the other in line for the wall. But, just recently, Windsor decided to pull a million dollars from the deal for the walls which was the first sign things weren't going well. According to their website... Windsor is a frozen food manufacturer... producing a full offering of old – world Italian cuisine.. authentic Pan – Asian appetizers and Southwestern comfort foods. Some current Windsor employees will be offered jobs at other company plants.

 

Mifflinville Fire

A fire marshal has been called in to determine what sparked a blaze at a home in the 200 – block of east third Street in Mifflinville Friday morning. The fire was discovered around 9:30. Firemen from Mifflinville receiving mutual aid from Lime Ridge... Espy and Berwick. They had the blaze knocked down in short order.

Damage was confined to one room and it's contents.

 

Danville Halloween Parade

A chilly night in Danville Thursday night... but it didn't dampen the enthusiasm of the hundred of people who took part in the Borough's annual Halloween Parade. Thousands of people lined the street... many in Halloween costumes... kids catching candy at curbside from folks on the nearly two – dozen floats in this year's procession. A lot of civic groups... several other high school bands... classic cars and up to date fire apparatus were in the line of march on Mill Street. The next big Halloween parade is in Catawissa Saturday night.

 

Weapons on Campus

The Board of Governors of Pennsylvania's State System of Higher Education is mulling over a policy that would allow students at the 14 state-owned universities... including Bloomsburg... to carry concealed firearms in certain places. WHTM – TV in Harrisburg is reporting that under the policy, firearms would not be allowed at sporting events or inside recreational buildings, classrooms, dorms, dining halls or student union centers. The state is still going through the public opinion process, but a decision on the policy could come as early as January.

 

United Way / Berwick Boulevard

The event has been around since the late 1940's... and it's entertained hundreds of thousands of people since that time. Now, the Jaycees are turning to the Berwick Area United Way for help.... but not in dollars, but rather, in trying to marshal manpower... so says United Way CEO Ginny Crake. The volunteer effort is open to community groups or individuals from November 2nd through the 9th. This year's annual edition of the Berwick Christmas Boulevard opens to the public December 7th.

 

Energy Seminar

The Reliance Fire Company... as well as the Berwick Blueprint Committee is holding a seminar early next month dealing with energy conservation. The fire company's Bridgette Coolbaugh says the big plus is having a speaker from the Pennsylvania Public Utility Commission will will talk about energy conservation. The program begins at 6 O'clock on November 6th at the Reliance Fire Company on West Third Street in Berwick.

 

Charges Dropped

Charges against an alleged shooter in Hazleton have been dropped. The reason... the reason Fernando Torres was accused of shooting was a no – show at a preliminary hearing. Luzerne County District Attorney Stefanie Salavantis said she had no choice but to withdraw the charges and drop the $1 – million bail holding Torres.

 

Hazleton Robbery

Police in the Hazleton area are investigating an armed robbery of a hotel this week. The target... the Hazleton Motor Inn on East Broad Street. The owner telling police a man with a weapon walked into the office wearing a ski mask and got away with a couple of hundred dollars in cash. If you have information about the robbery... call Hazleton police.

 

Plea Deal

A 38 – year old Luzerne County man pleaded guilty in federal court Wednesday... after he was charged only last month with receiving and distributing child pornography. Michael Shaw admitted using his computer to download and trade kiddie porn from 2013 to June of this year. Shaw now faces a 20 year prison sentence and a quarter million dollar fine.

 

Union County Fire

Fire investigators spent the day at Kuhns Brothers Lumber Firewood Division on Stein Lane in Winfield... in Union County. A fire of undetermined origin broke out late Wednesday afternoon. Neighbors spotting black smoke coming from the building at calling emergency dispatch. It took volunteer firemen about an hour to bring the blaze under control.

 

Kingston Chief

Kingston will soon have a new police chief. Sgt. Michael Krzywicki will become chief in early November following the resignation of former chief Keith Keiper resigned. Krzywidki has been on the force for 20 years... and has been interim chief since June. He'll be sworn in at the Kingston City Council's November 6th meeting.

 

Tourism is Sweet

Who says tourism in Pennsylvania isn't important. The flagship Hershey's Chocolate World attraction drew more than two million people this summer. That's a record for the facility that opened 40 years ago. A spokesperson for the company said attendance at the Chocolate World in Hershey was up eight percent over last year.

HS Football

Bloomsburg and Danville renewed their rivalry at Ironmen Stadium in Danville Friday night in our high school football game of the week. In a turnover-ridden game, Danville came back from behind to take a 31-23 win.

 

Berwick / Coughlin

At Crispin Field, unbeaten Berwick trounced once beaten Coughlin by a final score of 39-7.

 

Other Games

In other action tonight Southern Columbia beat Central Columbia 44-12. Saturday afternoon Columbia Montour Vo Tech is at home against North Penn.

 

BU Football

In college football Saturday, the unbeaten and 6th ranked Huskies of Bloomsburg University take on Cheyney at Danny Hale Field in Redman Stadium starting at 2 o'clock. Coverage on the WHLM Stations begins with the Husky Tailgate Show at noon.

 

BU Basketball

The Bloomsburg University men's basketball team saw its first action of the 2013-14 season on Thursday evening. They dropped the game at Division I Towson University, 86-65

 

NFL / Thursday

In the NFL Thursday night.. the Carolina Panthers defeated the Tampa Bay Buccaneers 31 – 13...

 

MLB / World Series

In game two of the World Series... the St. Louis Cardinals downed the Boston Red Sox 4 to 2. The series is now tied at one game each. Game three is 7:30 Saturday night in St. Louis.
