Berwick Community Walk

About a dozen people turned out Wednesday night in Berwick in an effort to take back the neighborhoods. It's all part of the Berwick Blueprint Community plan to get rid of undesirables and the crime along certain streets. Berwick Mayor Jim Timbrell says it's a show of cohesiveness of neighbors helping the neighborhoods. Shootings, carjackings and meth labs have become the norm in Berwick.... something the Blueprint Community wants to end.

 

Cold Weather

The weather has changed rapidly in the area during the last 24 to 48 – hours... and it's not something unexpected. Meteorologist Barry Lambert with the National Weather Service in State College says the overnight chilly air has brought the growing season to an end. And chilly overnight temperatures will be with us the next couple days.... with daytime temps struggling to get into the lower 50's.

 

Bridge Open

A detour on Zaners Bridge Road in Greenwood Township is no more. PennDOT crews have wrapped up the construction of a new bridge crossing a tributary of Green Creek. Agency spokesman Rick Mason says the previous 25 – foot long bridge... built in 1940... was structurally deficient. The span is a short distance east of the intersection of Route 254 and Rohrsburg Road... and should be good to carry traffic for the next 50 – years.

 

Speed Limit

PA Senate President Joe Scarnati says he wants to see the speed limit increased on rural sections of the interstate highways from 65 to 70 miles an hour. Republican State Representative David Millard of North Centre Township says he believes it a move by Scarnati to get the Governor's transportation bill off dead center. A similar bill introduced in the state house last year... but failed to get traction.

 

Governor / Transportation

Governor Corbett continues to hammer away at the General Assembly. During a news conference in Harrisburg Wednesday... He urged lawmakers to pass a transportation funding plan. To drive the point home... the Governor had a piece of concrete with him... a chunk which had fallen from Harrisburg's Mulberry Street Bridge.

 

Luzerne County

Things are getting a bit tight in neighboring Luzerne County. Manager Robert Lawton telling the Luzerne County Commission this week... without a property tax increase... and concessions from unions... an estimated 250 county workers could be given pink slips to make budget ends meet. That's not sitting well with property owners who may be faced with the biggest tax increased allowed by the county's home charter. Right now... Luzerne County faces a nearly $13 – million budget gap.

 

Guilty Plea

A 38 – year old Luzerne man pleaded guilty in federal court Wednesday... after he was charged only last month with receiving and distributing child pornography. Michael Shaw admitted using his computer to download and trade kiddie porn from 2013 to June of this year. Shaw now faces a 20 year prison sentence and a quarter million dollar fine.

 

Resource Center

It may have been chilly Wednesday, but students at the St. Nicholas – St. Mary Catholic School in Wilkes – Barre bundled up for the dedication of a new resource center. The old one was destroyed by fire last May... and since that time hundreds of volumes of books have been replaced... and new computers installed. That fire caused by an electrical outlet that went on the fritz.

 

Kiddie Porn Arrest

A Lycoming County man is in trouble with the law. 38 – year old Robert Pilot was busted by cops on child porn charges. Investigators say he's been under the microscope since 2008... allegedly involved in internet crimes linked to kiddie porn... such as downloading onto a home computer. He's currently in the Lycoming County Jail.

 

Church Thefts

State Police are investigating burglaries at two downriver churches either late Sunday or early Monday morning. The targets included the United Lutheran Church... as well as... the Mountain Presbyterian Church near Sunbury. The thieves made off with computers and a donation jar. Now... both churches plan to install security systems to deter further thefts.

BU Football

The unbeaten Bloomsburg University football team takes on Cheyney this Saturday at Danny Hale Field at Redman Stadium. The Wolves are winless, but they concern Huskies Coach Paul Darragh because their offense is unique. Cheyney at Bloomsburg kicks off Saturday at 2 O'clock. Coverage on the WHLM Stations begins at noon with The Husky Tailgate Show.

 

BU Basketball

The Bloomsburg University men's basketball team plays an exhibition Thursday night against a division one opponent. The Huskies travel to Maryland to take on Towson University.

 

High School Soccer

In the District 4 high school soccer playoffs Wednesday night. In a boys Class A first round game... Benton defeated Southern Columbia 2 to 1... In girls Class AA quarterfinal games... Danville blanked Montoursville 1 to nothing... and South Williamsport downed Bloomsburg 2 to 1. In girls Class A first round game... Millville defeated Mansfield 10 to nothing.

 

World Series

In the first game of the World Series last night in Boston... the Red Sox defeated the St. Louis Cardinals 8 to 1. The second game of their best of seven series is Thursday night.
